Judge in George Floyd trial says timing of settlement was ‘unfortunate’

The judge in the George Floyd case said he isn’t happy with the timing of the city’s $27 million wrongful death settlement related to the case, however, the trial will go on.
Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill discussed the impact the news may have had on the jury Monday. He told the defense team of former police officer Derek Chuavin that the timing of the city’s announcement that it had settled with Floyd’s family was “unfortunate.”

The judge also said he wishes the city would stop talking about the case so much, but the trial will move forward regardless. Cahill plans to ask jurors already selected for the trial if they heard about the settlement and whether it would impact their judgment.
Meanwhile, Chauvin’s lawyers want the judge to consider evidence from a 2019 arrest in which paramedics warned Floyd about the danger of consuming opioids with his heart condition.
