Iowa basketball coach’s son convicted of misdemeanor in deadly crash.
Teenage Son of University of Iowa Basketball Coach Found Guilty in Fatal Crash
IOWA CITY, Iowa—In a tragic incident, the teenage son of University of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been found guilty of failure to yield to a pedestrian who later died from injuries suffered in the crash.
A judge has ruled that Jonathan McCaffery, 17, is guilty of the simple misdemeanor in the crash that resulted in injuries to Corey J. Hite, 45, of Cedar Rapids. Sadly, Hite passed away approximately two weeks after the accident.
Jonathan is scheduled to be sentenced on October 13. He could face a fine of up to $1,000, a 180-day suspension of his driver’s license, or both.
The tragic incident occurred on May 22 when Jonathan was driving from his high school in Iowa City. He attempted to pass stopped cars in a right lane, unaware that one of the motorists had signaled a runner to cross the multilane street.
Unfortunately, Jonathan did not see the runner and collided with Hite when he stepped in front of the vehicle. The judge determined that Jonathan was not distracted or using a cellphone at the time of the accident.
The ruling comes after a trial held on August 29.
Hite, a dedicated member of the Iowa Army National Guard for 27 years, leaves behind a loving family of four children.
