President Joe Biden’s visit to Amman, the capital of Jordan, to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict with regional leaders has been canceled, according to the Times of Israel.
The scheduled meetings between Biden, Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Sissi, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have been called off, as announced by Jordan Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
“There is no point in doing anything at this time other than stopping this war,” Safadi said on Al Jazeera Arabic early Wednesday morning. “There is no benefit to anyone in holding a summit at this time.”
Abbas has withdrawn his participation in the meeting, protesting a falsely-reported “Israeli strike” on a hospital in Gaza. However, it was later revealed that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in collaboration with Hamas, had misfired rockets that caused casualties at Gaza’s Baptist Hospital.
The decision to cancel the summit may also be influenced by the recent riot at the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, where pro-Palestine protestors gathered.
The White House expressed condolences for the lives lost in the hospital explosion in Gaza and stated that Biden looks forward to consulting with the leaders in the future.
“The president sent his deepest condolences for the innocent lives lost in the hospital explosion in Gaza, and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. He looks forward to consulting in person with these leaders soon, and agreed to remain regularly and directly engaged with each of them over the coming days,” the White House official said.
