Jon Stewart calls Chuck Schumer ‘a human flat tire’ amid shutdown fight

Late-night talk show host Jon Stewart mocked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) over his attempt to make light of the government shutdown.

Stewart hosted Comedy Central’s The Daily Show on Monday and poked fun at Schumer’s press conference on Friday after the Senate failed for a fourth time to fund the government, which has been shut down for almost a week. By the time Stewart’s episode aired, the Senate held a fifth vote that failed to reopen the government.

“Democrats are adamant that we must protect the healthcare of the American people,” Schumer said during the press conference, which The Daily Show replayed on Monday.

Stewart interrupted the replay of Schumer’s press conference to joke about the senator’s hand gestures while admitting that Schumer had “good points … delivered with clarity.”

“If you had stopped there, that would be great, but you’re gonna keep talking, aren’t you?” Stewart said.

Schumer continued in the press conference, saying, “New data came out today from KFF, and that is not Kentucky Fried French Fries. KFF.” He then turned to Senate Democratic Steering and Policy Committee Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to repeat the joke, “That’d be Kentucky French Fries, hm?”

Schumer laughed at his joke while Klobuchar smiled and looked down. While watching the replay, Stewart did not laugh at the joke; instead, staring into the camera with a deadpan face.

“Who is that joke even for? Six-year-olds who watch C-SPAN?” Stewart said. “What the f*** are you doing?! Chuck Schumer is a human flat tire.”

“Look at Klobuchar! Poor Klobuchar. That is the face of someone who talked to their dad, who said, ‘Just please don’t do your Indian accent in the restaurant. That’s all I’m asking,’” Stewart added.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Sunday that there haven’t been any negotiations between President Donald Trump and party leadership on both sides since the government closed at midnight on Oct. 1. According to Jeffries, Trump has “gone radio silent.”

However, Trump said on Monday that he has been negotiating with Democratic leadership.

“We are speaking with the Democrats, and some very good things could happen with respect to healthcare,” Trump said.

Schumer insisted that “Trump’s claim isn’t true,” adding that they have not been in communication.
