John Stamos Opens Up About His Battle with Depression and Alcoholism

recalls being so depressed about getting a
DUI
in 2015 that he kept drinking.“When I did get the DUI…I came home from the hospital that night, I sat down, I drank a bottle of wine just to forget what just happened,” the “Full House” actor said during a recent interview with
People
. “And I never sobered up.”The 60-year-old said immediately after the incident, he had to go film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” Stamos said he kept drinking to numb the pain of what he was going through.
“When you sober up, you have to look at the ugly truth, so you keep drinking,” he told the outlet. “So I was kind of just loosely buzzed through the shooting of that movie.”
Stamos said those two incidents represent a rock bottom point in his life. “That was bottom,” he said during a recent appearance on the “
Bialik Breakdown
” podcast. “But I didn’t get it and I just numbed myself for a few weeks after that. And when I came home, my sisters were like, ‘Okay, it’s time to go, we found this place.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m ready.’”

“I hated it. I really hated the way I felt, hated disappointing people, hated myself, hated looking in the mirror going, ‘This is not who my parents raised. What am I doing? Who is this idiot?’ I would be so embarrassed,” he continued. “I had everything growing up. I had a beautiful childhood. I had no excuse to f*** my life up. And I did and it made me sick.”
Stamos entered a 30-day rehab in July 2015. He credits his family for helping him maintain
sobriety
, which he discussed in more detail in his memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.”“They have kept me on this path because going down the road of being sober and taking care of yourself, everybody tries,” the actor said in October, as The Daily Wire previously

. “Everybody does it. You could get going for a little while. Then, it’s like, ‘I can drink again.’ So it’s staying on the path is what they mostly do for me.”

Stamos had struggled with alcohol addiction for years, even before the DUI incident. He first sought treatment for alcoholism in 2007, after a two-month stint in rehab. However, he relapsed in 2010 and again in 2015 after the DUI.
In addition to his battle with alcoholism, Stamos also dealt with depression. He revealed that he had been dealing with depression since he was a teenager and has been taking medication for it.
Today, Stamos is open about his struggles and actively works on his sobriety. He attends
Alcoholics Anonymous
meetings and credits his wife, Caitlin McHugh, for being his rock and support system.
“I certainly couldn’t do it without her,” he said during the podcast. “I’m a lucky man.”
Stamos hopes his story can inspire others who are struggling with similar issues to seek help and find their path to recovery.
