John Fetterman claims social media worsened depression

Sen.‌ John Fetterman’s‍ Struggle with Depression Amplified by Social‍ Media

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) candidly shared on NBC ⁣News’s ‍Meet the Press that ⁤social media served as “an accelerant” for his clinical ‍depression, to the extent that doctors advised him to⁢ stay away from it.

According ⁢to Fetterman, social‍ media “absolutely”⁢ worsened⁤ his battle⁤ with ⁣depression.

The Impact on Fetterman’s ‍Life

It wasn’t just his doctors who cautioned him against using social ⁤media. “Everybody told ⁢me that,” Fetterman revealed.

Prior‍ to his ⁢hospitalization, Fetterman had mostly ‍avoided social media. However, he made “the mistake” of checking it in late 2022. “It wasn’t the content itself, because I expected that, but it was the overwhelming volume. I mean,⁤ where‌ is all this negativity coming from? Is this what my life will be like ⁢forever? Look at the toll it’s taken on me,” he ⁣recalled.

Concern for ⁢his family also weighed heavily on Fetterman’s mind. “My kids are scared⁤ to go back. They’ve abandoned social media, and we’ve stopped sharing family photos and personal moments,” he shared.

A Journey to Recovery

After spending several weeks at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center‍ to address ‌his depression, Fetterman states that he is now managing⁢ it better.

He admitted that he is “selectively” back on social media, but⁤ only to‌ make occasional posts.

“I would caution⁤ anyone that spending‍ time on ‌social media has never been ⁣beneficial for mental health,” Fetterman warned.

It’s clear that Sen.‍ John ‌Fetterman’s experience highlights the detrimental ‌impact social ‍media can have on mental well-being.
