John Fetterman holding pro-abortion rally on 9/11 with anti-police Planned Parenthood activist

John Fetterman is set to appear at a rally in support of women’s reproductive rights on Sunday, marking the Democratic candidate’s latest public appearance since suffering a stroke in May.

Fetterman, a Pennsylvania candidate who is running for Senate, is set to appear alongside Alexis McGill Johnson, Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s president and a prominent anti-police activist. The event is scheduled to be held in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, to promote abortion rights in the state after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this summer.

The Democratic candidate has campaigned on a platform championing abortion rights, noting he does not support legislation that bans the procedure. Fetterman is set to appear alongside several female lawmakers, including Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-PA) and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA).

MIDTERMS 2022: HERE ARE THE ISSUES PENNSYLVANIA VOTERS CARE ABOUT THE MOST

Election 2022 Senate Pennsylvania
Fetterman speaks at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, in August.

The event has raised some eyebrows because of its affiliation with Planned Parenthood, which has previously supported efforts “to defund and divest from the police,” and because it is scheduled on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as events on that day often commemorate the service of the police officers and firefighters who died in action. The Fetterman campaign has not responded to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner.

The rally also comes as Republicans have slammed Fetterman for backing policies that would allow some inmates to be released or get more lenient sentencing — accusing the Democrat of being soft on crime.

Sunday’s rally is one of a few public appearances Fetterman has made since recovering from a stroke in mid-May, sending a signal of hope to Democrats who are seeking to gain the Senate seat in order to maintain their majorities in Congress come November.

Fetterman was hospitalized in mid-May after suffering a stroke just days before winning the nomination for Senate in Pennsylvania, a key swing state in the midterm elections in November, later conceding he “almost died.” He was then diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes the heart muscle to become weakened and enlarged.

However, he maintains that the incident would not hinder him from completing his Senate duties.

Pennsylvania’s Senate race between Fetterman and Republican nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz has been called a toss-up by nonpartisan election analysts, and the seat is seen as possibly the best pickup opportunity for Democrats as Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) retires and Democrats seek to maintain or grow their Senate majority.
