Joe Concha suggests Newsom sees Harris as a 2028 ‘rival’

Washington Examiner Senior Writer Joe Concha predicted Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) will have to compete with former Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

“[Newsom] clearly does not have an affinity for Kamala Harris. And in the end, I think he now sees her as a possible rival for the nomination, the Democratic nomination in 2028 which he wants to be president more than anything in the world. That is very, very clear,” Concha said on Fox Report with Jon Scott Sunday.

“So this could end up being a possible rivalry between AOC and Kamala as far as getting the nomination,” Concha added.

Concha cited an excerpt from Harris’s latest book, 107 Days, where she reached out to Newsom for his endorsement after President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection campaign. Harris alleged she received a text response from Newsom that he was hiking at the moment and would talk to her later.

Newsom commented on the excerpt in a Sunday interview on NBC News’s Meet the Press. The governor explained that he offered his endorsement that same day.

“I sent out an endorsement a few minutes after that [text]. I was one of her first endorsements, the reason she was calling,” Newsom said. “I’ve known Kamala all my life. The last person she needs to reach out to is me. So I don’t know why that was even in the book.”

Concha pointed out that Newsom appeared at “zero” rallies on Harris’s behalf during her 107-day campaign. Still, Harris was at a rally with Newsom last week to support Proposition 50, an effort to redistrict her home state of California. When it comes to successful 2028 candidates, Concha predicted voters “will not elect an elite liberal California liberal whom they simply cannot relate to.”

“I don’t think Newsom or Kamala Harris is the answer here as far as being the nominee. It’s got to be somebody from the middle, a moderate, an Andy Beshear type,” Concha said. “I have a feeling this party has gone so far to the left that that just is not going to happen.”

Earlier this year, Newsom began touring the country. During a stop in South Carolina, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) accidentally introduced Newsom as one of “these candidates that are running for president.”

Newsom will reach his term limit as California’s governor next year.
