Mickey Mantle’s Yankees jersey to break auction records.
A Record-Breaking Auction: Mickey Mantle’s Iconic Jersey
A jersey worn by the legendary Mickey Mantle in 1958 is causing quite a stir in the auction world. This piece of baseball history is on track to fetch a record-breaking price.
The current bid for the “Mick’s” game-worn jersey stands at an impressive $3.25 million, surpassing the previous record of approximately $2.2 million for a Mantle-worn jersey.
Mantle donned this jersey during the Yankees’ home opener against the Milwaukee Braves, seeking redemption after their World Series loss in 1958.
Heritage Auctions, the auction house responsible for this remarkable item, has provided accompanying documentation and identified at least seven photo matches, solidifying its authenticity. They proudly state that the uniform is in near-perfect condition, missing only a single button to retain its original state. This impeccable preservation has earned it a Superior/Superior-Excellent designation of 9.5/10.
The jersey’s flannel fabric remains untarnished, free from stains, moth holes, or significant damage.
“It’s a rare sight to behold an all-original Yankees jersey from that era,” exclaimed Chris Ivy, the director of sports auctions at Heritage Auctions. “To have a 1950s era all-original Mickey Mantle pinstripes jersey that is photo-matched to several games is very scarce indeed.”
