Jersey City’s Democrat mayor sounds alarm about NJ gubernatorial race

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democrat, has expressed concern about a potential upset in the upcoming New Jersey gubernatorial election, suggesting that Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli could win. Fulop cited a recent AtlasIntel poll showing Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill leading by only 0.9 points. Fulop noted that if former President Trump were not in office,Ciattarelli might be leading by a important margin. Despite New Jersey’s historical status as a Democratic stronghold-highlighted by Joe Biden’s decisive win in 2020-several Democratic local leaders have endorsed Ciattarelli in this race. The campaign has also faced controversies, including a gaffe by Sherrill regarding her stock trading earnings. With the election approaching, both sides are pushing hard, and Ciattarelli expressed confidence in his chances too “change the direction of Jersey.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democrat, posted Saturday on X that New Jersey may experience an upset in its gubernatorial election and Republican Jack Ciattarelli could win.

“NJ may actually have an upset. This is prob great news for Jack’s team as we are a society that likes underdogs and comebacks by nature,” Fulop wrote

Fulop’s post was in response to an AtlasIntel poll that had Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) leading by only 0.9 points.

“AtlasIntel received an A+ rating and was ranked #1 in overall pollster quality in the U.S. for the 2024 election cycle,” Fulop commented on X.

The mayor of Jersey City was Sherrill’s onetime Democratic primary opponent.

“If Trump wasn’t in the White House, Ciattarelli would be up by 12 points,” Fulop said on the Hold That Thought… podcast in early October.

Several of Fulop and Sherrill’s New Jersey Democratic colleagues have crossed party lines in the governor’s race. North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco, Dover Mayor Jim Dodd, Garfield Mayor Everett Garnto Jr., and others have endorsed Ciattarelli for the governorship.

Sherrill also made a gaffe on Charlamagne tha God’s podcast, when she was unable to confirm or deny that she had made $7 million in stock trading since joining the House of Representatives in 2019.

New Jersey has been historically a Democratic stronghold. Former President Joe Biden won the state by 15.94% in 2020.

However, former Vice President Kamala Harris won the state by 5.91%. New Jersey had the biggest swing to the right in the 2020 election after New York.

“As I always like to say, what do championship teams do? We got four days left, let’s finish strong, let’s win, and let’s change the direction of Jersey,” Ciattarelli told his supporters outside of the voting center where he cast his early ballot.
