However, the ceremony was overshadowed by tense questions from reporters directed at Trump regarding pressing global issues, notably Russia’s ongoing aggression towards Ukraine. trump expressed disappointment over recent violence in the region and was cautious about his response to Vladimir Putin’s actions, suggesting there may be consequences if the conflict escalates.
during the press conference, Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the situation, claiming ownership of the resolution’s potential and positioning himself as a peacemaker. He briefly spoke of his recent visit to the Middle East, where he touted the acquisition of a luxury airplane gifted by Qatar, aimed at military use.
Trump also addressed domestic concerns, refuting a derogatory term used in financial circles regarding his trade negotiations and asserting that his strategy, including the imposition of tariffs, was part of a greater negotiation tactic. His overall narrative emphasized a proactive stance in both foreign policy and economic discussions while holding his predecessor accountable for ongoing conflicts.
Jeanine Pirro swearing-in overshadowed by tense questions to Trump on foreign policy
President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi swore in Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia on Wednesday. However, the event was largely overshadowed by Trump’s frustration with unsolved global crises.
Trump was quickly asked by reporters about his thoughts on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent attacks on Ukraine, as the United States hopes to end the conflict between the two nations.
“I’m very disappointed at what happened a couple of nights now, where people were killed in the middle of what you would call a negotiation. I’m very disappointed,” Trump said.
Trump downplayed questions about Russians calling his criticisms of Putin emotional and whether Putin was serious about ending the war.
“I can’t tell you that, but I’ll let you know in about two weeks, within two weeks, we’re going to find out, very soon,” Trump said about Putin. “We’re going to find out whether or not he’s tapping us along or not, and if he is, we’ll respond a little bit differently.”
Trump did not elaborate on what consequences Putin could face if the bombardment of Ukraine continues.
Republicans in the Senate have been pushing for more sanctions on Russia.
“Well, I’m not going to tell you exactly, but the words speak pretty loud,” Trump said. “We’re not happy about that situation. I think we’re doing very well with Iran. We’re doing very well with Gaza.”
However, Trump said he would not rule out a sitdown with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Well, I will if necessary,” Trump said when asked about a sitdown. “At this point, I wish it would have been that way a couple of months ago.”
Trump did not miss a chance to blame the war on his predecessor, former President Joe Biden.
“This isn’t my war. This is Biden’s war, Zelensky’s war, and Putin’s war. This isn’t Trump’s war,” he said. “I’m only here for one thing, to see if I can end it, to save 5,000 lives a week and a lot of money.”
Trump then touted his recent trip to the Middle East.
“I went to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and UAE, and we brought back $5.1 trillion,” he continued. “And, by the way, got a beautiful, big, magnificent, free airplane for the United States Air Force.”
Trump’s comment was about a luxury jet that Qatar gifted to the U.S. for presidential travel. The controversial gift has sparked criticism over alleged claims of corruption.
“It’s being refitted for military standards,” Trump said before declining to say how much the endeavor would cost. “Oh, I don’t know. Whatever it is, a hell of a lot less than building a new one. We’re waiting too long from Boeing. Boeing has got to get its act together.”
Trump was also asked about the war between Israel and Hamas and the humanitarian crisis it has created. He said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been working to get food to the people of Gaza.
Trump did acknowledge telling Netanyahu not to do anything to Iran as the U.S. engages in talks to stop the development of a nuclear weapon. Trump said he told Netanyahu over the phone that taking action against Iran would be “inappropriate” as the U.S. seeks to make a deal.
Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, told reporters, “We are on the precipice of sending out a new term sheet that hopefully will be delivered later on.”
Witkoff expressed confidence that “getting to a long-term resolution” between Israel and Hamas could happen imminently after more than three years of war.
On the domestic front, Trump was questioned about a derogatory term that traders use to describe his trade deals with foreign partners. Trump is allegedly referred to as a TACO, which stands for “Trump Always Chickens Out.”
“I’ve never heard that,” Trump said before bristling at the term.
Trump has repeatedly announced tariffs on trade partners before announcing a 90-day pause, which has kept the stock market on edge.

“You ask a nasty question like that. It’s called negotiation. You set a number,” Trump said.
“The sad thing is now, when I make a deal with them, it’s something much more reasonable,” Trump later said about his trade deals with partners, including the European Union. “They’ll say, oh, he was chicken. He was chicken. That’s so unbelievable.”
