Jason Chaffetz demands Utah law enforcement ‘do a better job’

Former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz reacted to the death of Charlie Kirk by pleading with local law enforcement to “catch this evil person” who shot Kirk.

“It is so sad,” Chaffetz said on Fox News’s The Will Cain Show on Wednesday in a live reaction to Kirk’s passing. “It makes me mad, I am so mad that this happened in our backyard. It’s an embarrassment.”

Chaffetz was at the event during the shooting, along with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law. Before becoming a Fox News contributor, Chaffetz represented the Third U.S. Congressional District of Utah, where the shooting took place.

“We are better than this. But there is somebody out there who is evil. Absolute total complete evil and they need to be taken down. Our law enforcement, I love them. They gotta do a better job,” Chaffetz said.

“They gotta communicate with us. Is there a shooter that’s still out there? And if so, what are we going to do to catch this evil person and make sure that he receives justice? That’s what we are feeling in this community right now,” Chaffetz said.

At the time of Chaffetz’s television appearance, police arrested and released one suspect. After the segment, a second suspect was arrested, questioned, and released.

“I want his wife and the country to know that the last question he took, the last thing he talked about to the people in Utah, thousands of people that wanted to come hear, is that his message was one of the love, of Jesus Christ, of his belief in prayer,” Chaffetz said. “But his message of love and thought of Jesus Christ is one that I hope is part of his lasting legacy.”

Then on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle, Chaffetz lamented the lack of a law enforcement presence before the shooting.

“There was no security. That’s the way it should be, but unfortunately, in today’s world, there’s evil,” Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz noticed how friendly Kirk was to all attendees, even those near “where they had a transgender flag,” according to Chaffetz. Charlie invited them into the conversation, and the crowd responded with cheers.

“[My kids] were excited to meet two people. I meet a lot of people. I’m on television. I’m a former congressman. There are two people in the world they want to meet: Donald Trump and Charlie Kirk,” Chaffetz said.

FBI Salt Lake City Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls said authorities have received over 130 tips since the investigation began.

Later on Fox News’s Hannity, Chaffetz noted Kirk’s popularity.

“Charlie Kirk was so incredibly popular. Nobody can draw a crowd like him, only Donald Trump,” Chaffetz said. “But I think that is where evil can’t stand it. And they thought their only solution was to kill him.”

On The Faulkner Focus, Chaffetz described his phone call with President Donald Trump, “I hope I can get through this part. The president called me, and I was very touched by that. And he talked about his love of Charlie and his family. That man, Donald Trump, is a rock. … Everything going on in the world, and the president wanted to see how I was doing … And it was a really good conversation, and very grateful that we have a president who cares the way he does.
