He urged them to prioritize Christ, pursue big dreams, and strive for greatness. Allen’s heartfelt remarks served as a reminder that true success transcends fame and wealth, focusing rather on faith, family, and leaving a meaningful legacy.
Retired NFL player Jared Allen may have received the highest honor of his professional career this past weekend, but that didn’t stop him from reminding audiences what’s actually important in life.
On Saturday, the former defensive end was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, capping off a historic career marked by several Pro-Bowl nods and league-setting records. Allen spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs, with short stints at the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers.
While Allen offered many thanks during his acceptance speech to the teammates, coaches, and fans who supported him throughout his time on (and off) the field, it’s his remarks about his faith and family that are drawing the most attention.
Speaking to his wife Amy, the former NFL player recalled advice he heard when the two of them were going through premarital counseling that “the two most important decisions you’ll make in life is 1) whether you follow Jesus or not, and 2) is who you marry.” He went on to credit his wife for being a “true game-elevator,” adding that he is in “awe of [her] every single day.”
Turning his focus to his daughters, Allen spoke about personal “legacy,” and how both of them are his “greatest accomplishments” in life.
“When I get called home to heaven one day, if all they talk about is this gold jacket, my career, then I failed miserably as a father, a husband, and a friend,” Allen said. “You two are my legacy. You are both so talented, and I cannot wait to see what you decide to do to conquer this world. So, always put Christ first, find your ‘why,’ dream big dreams, and always pursue greatness in whatever you do.”
The poignant remarks came after Allen cited Philippians 4:11-12 when thanking his father for his unwavering support and encouragement.
Allen’s speech is a stark reminder that, for all the money, fame, and fortune in the world, it is finding salvation in Christ and leaving a lasting legacy by means of being a successful husband and father that are truly the most meaningful accomplishments. And that is a lesson everyone would be wise to follow.
