Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for January 2026 – worth up to $994 for individual filers – will be issued in three days. Because Jan. 1 falls on a holiday/weekend, SSI payments that are normally sent on the first of the month will go out on the last weekday of the previous month, Dec. 31.
SSI supports people with limited income who are blind, aged 65 or older, or have qualifying disabilities. Maximum benefit levels are $994 for individuals, $1,491 for couples filing jointly, and up to $498 for essential caregivers. This January payment is the first to reflect a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026 (individuals received up to $967 in 2025).
To qualify, recipients must be U.S. citizens or fall into certain noncitizen categories, live in one of the 50 states, D.C., or the Northern Mariana islands, and not be absent from the U.S. for a full calendar month or 30 consecutive days. In addition to the previous prerequisites for receiving SSI payments, recipients must also be U.S. citizens or noncitizens in one of the alien classifications granted by the Department of Homeland Security.
