January Social Security direct payment worth $994 goes out in three days
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for January 2026 – worth up to $994 for individual filers – will be issued in three days. Because Jan. 1 falls on a holiday/weekend, SSI payments that are normally sent on the first of the month will go out on the last weekday of the previous month, Dec. 31.
SSI supports people with limited income who are blind, aged 65 or older, or have qualifying disabilities. Maximum benefit levels are $994 for individuals, $1,491 for couples filing jointly, and up to $498 for essential caregivers. This January payment is the first to reflect a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026 (individuals received up to $967 in 2025).
To qualify, recipients must be U.S. citizens or fall into certain noncitizen categories, live in one of the 50 states, D.C., or the Northern Mariana islands, and not be absent from the U.S. for a full calendar month or 30 consecutive days. The Social Security Management posts a full payment calendar and eligibility details on its website.

January 2026 Supplemental Security Income payments, worth up to $994, will be issued to recipients in three days.
SSI payments are typically issued on the first day of a month, though January’s payment will go out on Dec. 31. When the first of a month falls on a weekend or holiday, the latter being the case for January’s payment, SSI payments are issued on the last weekday of the previous month.
Beneficiaries are people with limited income who are either blind, aged 65 and older, or have a qualifying disability.
The amount beneficiaries receive varies based on several factors, including the number of people filing. For example, individual filers can receive up to $994, couples filing jointly can receive $1,491, and those providing essential care to SSI recipients can receive up to $498.
This January’s round of payments will be the first to reflect a cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. Payments will increase by 2.8% after 2025, when individual filers have received up to $967.
In addition to the previous prerequisites for receiving SSI payments, recipients must also be U.S. citizens or noncitizens in one of the alien classifications granted by the Department of Homeland Security.
