Maine Governor Janet Mills announces run for Senate, but took down campaign post
Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) appeared to post and then take down an announcement on Friday, launching a campaign to oust Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and flip the Maine seat blue.
Mills’s now-deleted post to X asked supporters to donate $5 or $10 to her campaign, explaining she is challenging Collins “because Maine families deserve a senator who fights back and stands up for us.”
In a similar video message attached to the post, Mills told viewers she’s running because “Collins has sold out Maine and bowed down to special interests and to Donald Trump.”
“But that ends now,” she said, according to screenshots captured by Inside Elections.
The governor also appeared to have briefly published an ActBlue page announcing her Senate run, but that page has been taken down as well.
Mills was expected to join a crowded field of Democratic contenders targeting Collins and launch her campaign on Tuesday, according to Axios and multiple other outlets.
She has already faced internal opposition ahead of the announcement, as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) urged Democrats to coalesce behind progressive Graham Platner.

“It’s disappointing that some Democratic leaders are urging Governor Mills to run. We need to focus on winning that seat & not waste millions on an unnecessary & divisive primary,” Sanders warned Thursday. “Graham Platner is a great working-class candidate for Senate in Maine who will defeat Susan Collins.”
