Raskin: Biden and Trump’s 2024 tie is a ‘great question’.
Rep. Jamie Raskin: Trump and Biden Neck-and-Neck in Polls Despite Indictment
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) responded to the question of how President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are tied in the polls for the 2024 presidential election, despite Trump’s recent indictment. Raskin called it a “great question” and expressed his wish for Abraham Lincoln to be present to address it. He highlighted the transformation of the Republican party into a cult of authoritarian personality, with even Republicans running against Trump hesitant to challenge his betrayals of the Constitution.
Trump and Biden Tied in Recent Polls
In the latest polling data, Trump and Biden were deadlocked at 43% support in a hypothetical general election face-off. This comes as Trump faced four new charges related to the January 6th Capitol Hill riot and his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Despite these developments, the race remains highly competitive.
“Well, it’s a great question,” said Raskin when asked about Trump and Biden being tied. “I wish Lincoln were around to pose it to him because it’s his political party that they dragged into the mud here. I mean, that was a pro-freedom, anti-slavery, anti-nothing pro-immigration party, and now it’s become a cult of authoritarian personality. And even the Republicans running against Trump dare not challenge the clear betrayals of his Constitutional oath.”
Raskin Highlights Trump’s Actions and Knowledge
Raskin specifically discussed Trump’s actions between the 2020 election and the Capitol protest on January 6th, emphasizing that Trump knew exactly what he was doing. He pointed out that despite 60 federal and state courts rejecting every argument about electoral fraud and corruption brought forward by the Trump administration, the former president persisted in his claims.
“You might believe that your bank owes you some money; you don’t have the right to go rob the bank,” said Raskin.
Trump’s Indictment and Response
Trump now faces four counts in his latest indictment, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. After pleading not guilty at his arraignment, Trump described the charges as “persecution of a political opponent.”
In a recent poll, 69% of Republican voters believe that Trump is the strongest nominee to compete against Biden in the 2024 presidential election. This includes 45% who voted “definitely strongest” and 24% who chose “probably strongest.”
