Ivy League students surpass national average in identifying as LGBT.
Ivy League Students Embrace LGBT Identities at Higher Rates
A recent analysis of polls reveals that Ivy League students are embracing LGBT identities at a significantly higher rate compared to the general population. While the U.S. adult population has seen an increase in individuals identifying as “something other than heterosexual,” Ivy League schools have experienced an even more pronounced surge.
Notable Statistics
In a recent poll conducted at Brown University, an astonishing 38% of the student body did not identify as heterosexual. Similarly, at Princeton, a student survey showed that only 65% of the class of 2023 identified as heterosexual.
Yale reported that approximately 75% of its student body identified as heterosexual, with 14% identifying as bisexual. Harvard also displayed similar results, with 71% of incoming freshmen in 2021 identifying as heterosexual and 13% identifying as bisexual.
A More Accepting Society
Josephine Kovecses, a student at Brown University, believes that the rise in non-heterosexual identifications is a result of a more accepting societal attitude towards LGBT identities. She expressed excitement about the growing numbers and the ability for queer individuals to be open about their identities, particularly at Brown.
Cultural Pressures and Stigma
Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project, suggests that the increase in students identifying as something other than exclusively heterosexual is influenced by cultural pressures. He notes that society has attached a stigma to being straight, making it more appealing for young people to identify as a sexual minority.
Schilling references sexologist Alfred Kinsey’s controversial 1953 report, which indicated that a significant number of American men had some level of sexual attraction to other men. He argues that the numbers of people identifying as LGBTQ have skyrocketed since then, partly due to the influence of this report and societal attitudes.
According to Schilling, “Elites have essentially made being straight or normal into a stigma, and the social pressure on America’s youth to identify as a sexual minority is enormous.”
