Italians protest radical assault ruling by filming self-touching.

Italians Take a Stand Against Controversial Ruling on Nonconsensual Touching

Italians across social media are uniting in a powerful protest against a recent judge’s ruling that has sparked outrage. The ruling states that nonconsensual touching is not considered a crime unless it lasts for a minimum of 10 seconds.

The ruling came to light when a 66-year-old man, who openly admitted to inappropriately touching a 17-year-old school girl as a joke, was acquitted. This decision has left many questioning the justice system.

A Creative and Impactful Protest

Responding to this controversial ruling, citizens all over Italy have taken to social media to express their discontent. Videos have flooded platforms, showing individuals touching their chests while a timer counts down from 10 seconds.

Interestingly, many of these videos intentionally last for only 9 seconds, serving as a direct criticism of the ruling. The message is clear: the law should protect victims regardless of the duration of the assault.

Hashtags Amplify the Message

Accompanying these videos are hashtags such as “#10secondi” (10 seconds) and “palpata breve” (quick feel). These hashtags help to unite the movement and spread awareness about the issue at hand.

The Incident that Sparked the Outrage

The incident that ignited this widespread protest occurred in April 2022. Antonio Avola, a caretaker at a high school in Rome, groped a female student in a stairwell. Shockingly, he not only touched her behind and underwear but also pulled her pants down.

In an interview, the girl bravely shared her experience, stating, “Love, you know I was joking.” She emphasized that what happened to her was not a joke and expressed her disappointment in how an older man could treat a teenager in such a manner.

Despite the efforts of prosecutors to secure a sexual assault conviction and prison time, the charges against Avola were dismissed due to the ruling’s time requirement.

“That handful of seconds was more than enough for the caretaker to make me feel his hands on me,” the girl stated, highlighting the impact of even a brief moment of nonconsensual touching.

Join the Movement

This powerful protest serves as a reminder that every second counts when it comes to respecting personal boundaries. It is a call for change and a demand for justice.
