Biden aims for economic optimism, distancing from Trump’s troubles.
President Biden Stays Focused on Economic Agenda Amid Trump’s Indictments
Don’t expect President Joe Biden to address the recent indictments of former President Donald Trump. Instead, senior Democratic officials say the president will focus on the “issues” and continue preaching his economic agenda, especially ahead of Wednesday’s one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act.
Biden Highlights Strong Economy and Differences with Republicans
That mindset was on display during the president’s Tuesday remarks in Milwaukee, where he doubled down on his green energy transition and outlined the differences between “Bidenomics” and the Republican platform.
“Look how far we’ve come today. Today, this is not hyperbole. We have the strongest economy in the world. You’re looking at me a little skeptical, but I promise you. Check it out,” Biden posed to the crowd Tuesday in Wisconsin. “The strongest economy in the world, the highest job satisfaction in 36 years. Our inflation rate has dropped to the lowest among major economic nations in the world, and if we keep it up, it’s gonna go lower.”
The president also debuted a new attack line against Republicans, which people familiar with his campaign’s thinking say will be repeated in the future.
“All I hear from my friends on the other side of the aisle is what’s wrong with America. There’s a lot wrong with America, like every country,” Biden declared. “They tell us America’s failing. But they’re wrong. Democrats, Republicans, independents, conservatives, liberals, I don’t think they understand the average American.”
“Whatever we’ve set our mind to as a country, we’ve always accomplished. Name me one thing in American history where America stood together and said we’re going to solve that problem and we didn’t do it,” he closed. “America isn’t failing. America is winning, and I’m proud of the historic legislation my administration has passed.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, who has ramped up her own travel to tout Biden’s economic agenda in recent weeks, also delivered economy and climate focused remarks in Seattle on Tuesday.
Democrats’ Plan to Amplify the Inflation Reduction Act
The Biden campaign and Democratic National Committee officials additionally outlined their “three-pronged” plan to amplify the “impact” of the Inflation Reduction Act starting Wednesday.
- “Reactivating” relational organizing networks
- The rollout of English and Spanish language “messaging toolkits” in all 50 states
- Earned media
“We are using the [Inflation Reduction Act] anniversary as a hub to engage our grassroots network across the states, engaging stakeholders, activating voters with resources to tout the landmark legislation,” a DNC official stated in an interview.
That official stated that the national party is working directly with state parties and local officials to host press briefings, background calls, and events pressing the Bidenomics messaging in Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
“We know that the Inflation Reduction Act’s cost-cutting and job-creating provisions are extraordinarily popular with the American people, and that’s why Team Biden-Harris is using the law’s anniversary as an opportunity to arm our grassroots network and Democratic leaders across the country with tools to communicate how the landmark legislation is creating an economic boom, generating jobs, lowering costs, making the largest investment in climate action in history, and boosting American manufacturing in their own communities,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez additionally told the Washington Examiner. “As MAGA Republicans threaten to roll back this cost-cutting and popular legislation, Democrats nationwide are meeting voters where they are to emphasize the importance of sending President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House in 2024 so they can continue building on the progress we’ve made.”
Biden Stays Focused on Delivering for the American People
Still, the Biden team’s messaging will face tough competition for headlines given Trump’s latest indictment in Georgia.
The former president announced Tuesday that he plans to hold a press conference in New Jersey on Monday, where he will detail a 2020 election report on alleged fraud that he claims will be a ”complete exoneration” of the charges filed by a grand jury and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
Furthermore, there is an outside chance that Trump could still take part in the first Republican presidential primary debate on Aug. 23, and he has until the end of the week to turn himself in to be arraigned in Georgia.
White House principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton demurred Tuesday when asked about Trump’s indictment hogging media coverage.
“This president will stay focused on delivering for the American people. That is his job. That is his priority, and, you know, I think we’ve seen this movie before, actually,” she told reporters flying with Biden to Wisconsin. “The president has continued to, over the past and in recent months, to travel around the country and talk about the ways in which the Investing in America agenda, all of the legislation over the past two-and-a-half years that he’s managed to get passed.”
“That’s what the president’s focused on,” Dalton closed. “That’s what he’ll continue to talk about.”
