Israel war: Families of hostages held by Hamas descend on Congress seeking help
Lawmakers Vow to Fight for Safe Release of Hostages Taken by Hamas
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle came together on Tuesday to meet with hundreds of family members whose loved ones were abducted and taken hostage by Hamas. In a powerful display of support, members of Congress streamed into a large hearing room, where they spoke with the families and expressed their commitment to the safe release of the hostages.
“He is brilliant, sensitive, so tall and strong, a loving son and a loving friend,” said Ditza Or, describing her 30-year-old son Avinatan Or to Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Avinatan Or was last seen in a viral video being taken hostage by Hamas after attending a music festival with his girlfriend Noa Argamani. His mother, Ditza, expressed her longing to hug him again, conveying the deep pain felt by the families.
“We met with some high-ranking officials in Israel, I can’t get into the details, but they are actively working to get the hostages out,” McCaul assured Or.
In a powerful show of unity, senators and members of Congress from both parties stood up at the back of the room, holding pictures of the hostages provided by the families. They pledged to use all their power and resources to bring the hostages home.
“We are all standing here in unity with you,” said Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), the third-ranking member in the Senate, speaking at the podium. “We wanted to be here to see the faces, to hear the stories, to share the pain, and make sure that the world never turns its back on the stories or the people of Israel.”
It has been just over a month since Hamas’s surprise attack, which tragically claimed the lives of 1,400 people in Israel. During the attack, the terrorist group abducted approximately 240 Israelis, with only four having been released so far.
Earlier on Tuesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee organized a closed-door screening of a “highly graphic” video of Hamas’s attack on Israel. The purpose was to provide lawmakers with a firsthand understanding of the events that unfolded on October 7. The screening, supplied by the Israeli Embassy, aimed to emphasize the urgent need for action against Hamas.
“The United States Congress will not rest and will be working with the state of Israel so that you can get back your family members, so that you can resume the peaceful lives in which you had. We will make sure to wipe out Hamas, so that that evil no longer exists,” declared Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Following the statements made by members of Congress, the families of the hostages were invited to share the stories of their loved ones at the podium. One woman, who did not identify herself, tearfully spoke about her older brother, Alex Lubnov, who has been missing since October 7. Alex was working at the music festival and the family has been informed that he has been taken to Gaza, leaving behind his pregnant wife and their two-year-old child.
“His wife is all home alone,” the woman said through tears.

What specific actions will lawmakers take to increase pressure on Hamas to release the hostages immediately and unconditionally?
D Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “We will work tirelessly to ensure the safe release of your loved ones.”
The meeting between lawmakers and the families of hostages taken by Hamas comes at a crucial time, as negotiations for their release have hit a roadblock. Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has been known to use hostages as bargaining tools in their disputes with Israel. This has led to a dangerous and volatile situation for those held captive and their families, who live in constant fear for their loved ones’ safety.
“The international community must stand together and condemn Hamas’ actions,” expressed Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL). “We cannot allow innocent people to be used as pawns in this dangerous game.”
The United States has been working closely with Israel to secure the release of its citizens, but progress has been slow. Lawmakers are now vowing to intensify their efforts, utilizing diplomatic channels and applying pressure on Hamas to release the hostages immediately and unconditionally.
“This is a human rights issue that cannot be ignored,” emphasized Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). “We will ensure that the plight of these hostages is heard and that justice is served.”
In addition to diplomatic efforts, lawmakers also pledged to provide support to the families who have been deeply affected by this ordeal. They discussed possible ways to assist with financial aid, mental health resources, and legal support to help ease the burden on the families and provide them with the assistance they need during this difficult time.
“We cannot forget about the families who are experiencing unimaginable pain,” stated Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “We will stand by them and do whatever it takes to bring their loved ones home safely.”
The meeting ended with a moment of silence as lawmakers and family members joined together in prayer for the safe return of the hostages. It served as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
This bipartisan effort by lawmakers demonstrates that when it comes to the safety and well-being of American citizens, their political differences can be put aside for the greater good. It is a heartening display of unity and solidarity that sends a clear message to Hamas and the international community that the safe release of the hostages is of utmost importance and will not be compromised.
As the families of the hostages continue to endure the agonizing wait for their loved ones’ return, they can find solace in knowing that their voices are being heard and that lawmakers are fighting tirelessly to secure their release. The meeting between lawmakers and the families serves as a symbol of hope and a reminder that the international community stands united against those who use innocent lives as pawns.
“We will not rest until every hostage is safely reunited with their families,” reaffirmed Congressman Michael Waltz (R-FL), a former Green Beret. “Their freedom is our top priority.”
