Israel strikes Gaza, halts aid after claiming Hamas violated ceasefire

Israel has launched strikes on Gaza and suspended humanitarian aid following attacks by Hamas militants against Israeli troops in southern Gaza, violating a recently brokered ceasefire. An Israeli security official announced that aid deliveries into Gaza woudl be halted “until further notice,” after previously reducing the number of aid trucks due to Hamas’s slow release of deceased hostages. The Israel Defense Forces reported that terrorists fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire at troops dismantling Hamas infrastructure near Rafah. In response, Israel initiated military action to neutralize threats, including targeting tunnels and military structures used by Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Hamas’s ceasefire violation and ordered strong military retaliation. He also emphasized the conflict as part of a broader “War of Redemption” against perceived regional threats, invoking religious and nationalistic rhetoric. The ceasefire agreement, facilitated in part by former President Donald Trump, required Hamas’s disarmament and the release of hostages in exchange for aid, but Hamas has demanded special equipment to recover remains of deceased hostages buried under rubble.

Israel strikes Gaza and halts humanitarian aid after claiming Hamas violated ceasefire

Israel responded to alleged missile and gunfire at its troops in southern Gaza on Sunday with strikes and the halting of humanitarian aid into the strip.

An unnamed Israeli security official said aid would be halted “until further notice.” The Israeli government had already been withholding half the number of humanitarian aid trucks originally set to flow into Gaza due to Hamas’s slow release of the deceased hostages.

Earlier Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces alleged that “terrorists” fired at its troops, less than a week after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was brokered.

“Earlier today, terrorists fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire toward IDF troops operating to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in the Rafah area, in southern Gaza, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement,” the IDF wrote on X. “In response, the IDF has begun striking in the area to eliminate the threat and dismantle tunnel shafts and military structures used for terrorist activity.”

“These terrorist actions constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, and the IDF will respond firmly,” the IDF added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military response, accusing Hamas directly.

“Following the violation of the ceasefire by Hamas, Prime Minister Netanyahu held a consultation with the Defense Minister and the heads of the security establishment and directed that strong action be taken against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip,” the Prime Minister’s X account wrote.

Netanyahu was working to name the conflict between his country and Hamas as the “War of Redemption” ahead of the alleged attack on Sunday.

“We rose up dynamically on our feet and returned intensive war to our enemies. We removed the existential threat of the Iranian axis from us. We established the national redemption project in the Land of Israel, in our strong and flourishing state,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

“During ‘Operation Rising Lion’ against Iran, I emphasized the exalted destiny rooted in our heritage: ‘The people will rise up like a lion,’” Netanyahu said, quoting the book of Numbers in the Old Testament, known to Jewish people as the Tanakh.

President Donald Trump helped broker the peace deal, which demanded the disarmament of Hamas and allowed its members who gave up their arms to seek amnesty. In return, they would receive aid delivery. Hamas has said it would need “special equipment” to extract the remains of deceased hostages, whose return was a condition of the ceasefire, buried under rubble.
