Israel strikes Gaza after claiming Hamas violated ceasefire
Israel has launched strikes on targets in Gaza following alleged attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli troops, violating a ceasefire agreement brokered less than a week earlier. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), militants fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire at Israeli forces operating in southern Gaza’s Rafah area. In response, the IDF began retaliatory strikes aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, including tunnels and military sites used by Hamas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military response, condemning Hamas for the ceasefire violation and ordering strong action against terrorist targets. Netanyahu is reportedly framing the ongoing conflict as the “War of Redemption,” emphasizing israel’s determination to eliminate existential threats, notably from Iran-aligned groups.
The ceasefire deal, mediated by former President Donald Trump, required Hamas to disarm, with incentives including amnesty and humanitarian aid. Though, Israel is currently withholding half of the agreed aid shipments, citing Hamas’s slow release of deceased hostages.Hamas has stated it requires special equipment to recover the bodies of these hostages buried under rubble. The situation remains tense as diplomatic and military efforts continue.
Israel strikes targets in Gaza after claiming Hamas violated ceasefire
Israel responded to alleged missile and gunfire at its troops in southern Gaza on Sunday, less than a week after brokering a ceasefire.
The Israel Defense Forces alleged that “terrorists” fired at its troops on Sunday.
“Earlier today, terrorists fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire toward IDF troops operating to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in the Rafah area, in southern Gaza, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement,” the IDF wrote on X. “In response, the IDF has begun striking in the area to eliminate the threat and dismantle tunnel shafts and military structures used for terrorist activity.”
“These terrorist actions constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, and the IDF will respond firmly,” the IDF added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military response, accusing Hamas directly.
“Following the violation of the ceasefire by Hamas, Prime Minister Netanyahu held a consultation with the Defense Minister and the heads of the security establishment and directed that strong action be taken against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip,” the Prime Minister’s X account wrote.
Netanyahu was working to name the conflict between his country and Hamas as the “War of Redemption” ahead of the alleged attack on Sunday.
“We rose up dynamically on our feet and returned intensive war to our enemies. We removed the existential threat of the Iranian axis from us. We established the national redemption project in the Land of Israel, in our strong and flourishing state,” Netanyahu said in a statement.
“During ‘Operation Rising Lion’ against Iran, I emphasized the exalted destiny rooted in our heritage: ‘The people will rise up like a lion,’” Netanyahu said, quoting the book of Numbers in the Old Testament, known to Jewish people as the Tanakh.
President Donald Trump helped broker the peace deal, which demanded the disarmament of Hamas and allowed its members who gave up their arms to seek amnesty. In return, they would receive aid delivery. However, the Israeli government is withholding half the number of humanitarian aid trucks originally set to flow into Gaza due to Hamas’s slow release of the deceased hostages.
