Iran’s Supersonic Cruise Missile Technology Raises Concerns
Iran has announced that it possesses the technology to build supersonic cruise missiles, according to Iranian state media. This development is likely to heighten Western concerns about Tehran’s missile capabilities.
The announcement comes in the wake of reports about the deployment of over 3,000 U.S. sailors and Marines aboard two U.S. warships in the Red Sea. The purpose of this deployment is to deter Iran from seizing and harassing merchant ships passing through the Gulf’s Strait of Hormuz.
“The supersonic cruise missile will open a new chapter in Iran‘s defense program, as it is extremely difficult to intercept a cruise missile flying at supersonic speeds,”

“The new cruise missile is currently undergoing its tests,” added the agency.
Despite opposition from the U.S. and Europe, Iran has expressed its intention to further develop its “defensive” missile program. However, Western military analysts believe that Iran sometimes exaggerates its missile capabilities.
Iran boasts one of the largest missile programs in the Middle East and claims that its weapons can reach the bases of its arch-foes, Israel and the United States, in the region.
Concerns about Iran‘s ballistic missiles played a role in former U.S. president Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from Tehran’s 2015 nuclear pact with six major powers and reimpose sanctions on the country.
Efforts to salvage the nuclear deal between Tehran and U.S. president Joe Biden’s administration have stalled since September last year.
In the most recent incident of ship attacks in the Gulf, the U.S. Navy intervened last month to prevent Iran from seizing two commercial tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
In response to Iran‘s seizure and harassment of commercial shipping vessels, the Pentagon sent additional F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, along with a warship, to the Middle East last month to monitor key waterways in the region.
