Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that President Donald Trump is being influenced by “disinformation” as he weighs a decision to strike Iran over its deadly crackdown on anti-regime protesters.
Araghchi claimed on Sunday that “certain parties” who want war for “their own benefit” are pushing U.S. military intervention and a conflict with Iran. While he appeared unfazed by that prospect, he nonetheless urged Trump to avoid it.
“I’m not concerned about war. What I’m concerned [about] is miscalculations and military operations based on misinformation and disinformation campaigns,” he told CNN’s Frederik Pleitgen. “I think President Trump is wise enough to make a correct decision.”
Trump has been considering a U.S. military operation on Iran for weeks after thousands of protesters were killed by the country’s security services. He reportedly received a new slate of options last week that are designed to either do further damage to Iran’s nuclear and missile facilities or weaken Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The U.S. military has simultaneously amassed an armada of warships in the Middle East that includes the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. Those ships arrived in the region on Monday after being redirected from its Indo-Pacific deployment.
Trump has also left the door open to resuming nuclear deal negotiations that collapsed last summer, something the regime has signaled openness to despite their denials of ever desiring or possessing nuclear weapons.
Araghchi said on Sunday a deal that included “no nuclear weapons” would be a “very good” one and “is achievable even in a short period of time.” He added that in return, Iran would demand the lifting of pressing sanctions.
While Trump deliberates, the regime has been warning him about the consequences of any U.S. military operation on Iran.
They originally pledged to target U.S. bases in the region in response. But Khamenei went a step further on Sunday when he threatened a “regional war” in the event of a U.S. attack.

Araghchi suggested these are one and the same, saying “since U.S. bases are spread across the region, then inevitably, many parts of the region would be involved, engaged, and that could be very dangerous.”
Trump responded to Khamenei’s threat by saying if a nuclear deal is not struck, “then we’ll find out whether or not he was right.”
