The International Chess Federation Implements New Policy on Transgender Women in Women’s Events
The International Chess Federation, also known as FIDE, has recently made an important announcement regarding transgender women’s participation in women’s chess events. FIDE, recognized as the world’s top chess federation and host of the prestigious World Chess Championship, has been receiving numerous requests from players identifying as transgender.
“Change of gender is a change that has a significant impact on a player’s status and future eligibility to tournaments, therefore it can only be made if there is a relevant proof of the change provided,” according to FIDE.
FIDE has decided that transgender women will not be allowed to compete in women’s events until their individual cases have been thoroughly assessed. This assessment process may take up to two years, ensuring a fair evaluation of gender change.
“If a player has changed the gender from a man into a woman, all the previous titles remain eligible,” FIDE said.
However, if a current women’s title holder decides to identify as male, their title will be abolished. Reinstatement would only be possible if the person changes their gender back to a woman.
FIDE acknowledges that the issue of transgender chess players is an evolving one, and they recognize the need for further policy development in line with research evidence. Open competitions are still held by FIDE, allowing all players to participate regardless of gender identity.
