Bernie Moreno’s internal poll reveals pro-Trump ad boosted his lead in Ohio Senate primary
EXCLUSIVE: Bernie Moreno Holds Slim Advantage in Ohio Senate Primary, New Poll Shows
Following a multimillion-dollar statewide ad buy, a new internal poll reveals that Bernie Moreno is leading the Republican primary race for the Ohio Senate seat. The poll, obtained by the Washington Examiner, shows Moreno polling at 15%, with Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose at 14% and businessman Matt Dolan at 13%. However, a significant 58% of voters remain undecided.

The poll, which surveyed 950 likely Republican primary voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%. While Moreno appears to have an advantage, the race is still within the margin of error.
“Bernie Moreno’s strength as a candidate is growing, thanks to his effective messaging on his biography and his support for former President Trump, as well as Senator J.D. Vance. With continued strong messaging and financial resources, Bernie Moreno is positioning himself to win the GOP nomination,” reads the memo from the Moreno campaign.
In addition, Moreno recently received an endorsement from Senator Mike Lee (R-UT).
It’s important to note that this internal poll differs from the public polling on the race. Recent public polls consistently show LaRose in the lead, with Dolan in second and Moreno in third.
This is the first poll to show Moreno leading the field, and it comes amidst a $2 million statewide ad campaign highlighting his conservative credentials and alignment with former President Donald Trump. Moreno was the first candidate to advertise on broadcast television.
The ad features a clip of Trump saying, “We love Ohio and we love Bernie Moreno.” While Trump has not officially endorsed any candidate in the race, Moreno believes that aligning himself with the former president will give him an edge.
The poll was conducted between November 18 and November 20, halfway through the statewide ad campaign.
“The recent television ad purchase has significantly shifted the race, giving Moreno the most significant momentum in this field,” states the memo.
According to the poll, Trump leads the rest of the Republican field in the presidential primary by 39 points, indicating his enduring popularity in Ohio. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is in second place, followed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in third.
All three GOP candidates have previously run for statewide office. Dolan ran for Senate in 2022 but came in third in the primary. Moreno also ran in 2022 but dropped out after a private conversation with Trump. LaRose currently holds a statewide office as secretary of state.
The winner of the Republican Primary will face Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who has held the seat since 2007. Ohio has been leaning Republican in recent years, voting for Trump in the last two presidential elections. Since 2011, Brown has been the only statewide elected Democrat in Ohio, apart from the state Supreme Court justices.

Ben Kindel, a spokesman for LaRose, expressed skepticism about the poll, stating, ”Just like a used car salesman exaggerating the value of a product he’s trying to sell. I wouldn’t buy a Porsche from Bernie, and I’m certainly not buying his ’poll.’ Ohio voters won’t buy his flip flops on immigration, President Trump, or abortion next March either.”
Dolan’s team declined to comment.
What factors does the Moreno campaign attribute to his growing strength as a candidate?
While the public polling paints a different picture, Bernie Moreno’s internal poll suggests that he holds a narrow advantage in the Ohio Senate primary race. According to the exclusive poll obtained by the Washington Examiner, Moreno is polling at 15%, followed closely by Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose at 14% and businessman Matt Dolan at 13%. However, the poll also reveals that a significant 58% of voters remain undecided, leaving the race open for any candidate to make gains.
The poll surveyed 950 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%. Although Moreno appears to be in the lead, the margin of error means that the race is still highly competitive. Therefore, it is crucial not to discount the other candidates who are still within striking distance.
The Moreno campaign attributes his growing strength as a candidate to effective messaging on his biography and his support for former President Trump, as well as Senator J.D. Vance. The campaign memo highlights the importance of maintaining strong messaging and financial resources to position Moreno as the frontrunner for the GOP nomination.
Adding to his momentum, Moreno recently received an endorsement from Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), further bolstering his credibility among Republican voters.
It is noteworthy that this internal poll contradicts the public polling data on the race, which consistently showed LaRose leading, with Dolan in second place and Moreno trailing third. However, this new poll marks the first instance where Moreno has taken the lead, and it coincides with a $2 million statewide advertising campaign that emphasizes his conservative credentials and alignment with former President Donald Trump. Notably, Moreno was the first candidate to advertise on broadcast television, signaling his commitment to reaching a broad audience.
As the Ohio Senate primary race heats up, it is clear that Moreno’s strong messaging and strategic campaign initiatives are paying off. With the race still within the margin of error, it remains to be seen whether Moreno can maintain his advantage and secure the GOP nomination. However, his recent polling success indicates that he is a viable contender in the race and should not be underestimated.
