Instagram introduces a new feature to control the visibility of political posts
Instagram’s New Policy on Political Content Recommendations
Instagram recently implemented a subtle but significant change that many users quickly noticed – a shift towards limiting the promotion of political content on its platform and Threads. This decision mirrors Meta’s strategy with Facebook, which initiated similar restrictions starting from February 9. Meta cited user feedback as the driving force behind these adjustments and clarified that it would no longer suggest political accounts to users.
Clarity on Content Limitations
Initially, Instagram’s policy defaulted to restricting political content, a move that some users found ambiguous. The platform assured users that while it wouldn’t interfere with content from accounts they actively followed, it also wouldn’t actively promote political content from unfollowed accounts. To provide users with more control, Instagram shared a settings screenshot enabling users to adjust their preferences around political content recommendations.
Additionally, Instagram introduced a lesser-known feature called “reduced by fact-checking,” aimed at reducing the visibility of content flagged by independent fact-checkers for misinformation. This aligns with Meta’s ongoing efforts to combat misinformation by providing users with more credible content.
If a user chooses to disable this feature, they receive a warning notifying them of potential exposure to false or misleading content. Notably, users under 18 lack the option to entirely deactivate this setting, emphasizing Instagram’s commitment to promoting accurate and reliable content.
Voices of Concern and Critique
“Meta/Instagram limited my ability to view ‘political content.’ Defined to include content re: ‘government, elections, or social topics that affect people or society.’ My ‘default’ setting was to censor. This is not okay.” – Attorney Scott Hechinger
“Listen up! Instagram has automatically altered your settings to reduce political content on your feed. This is an obvious attempt to once again filter out conservative voices. Be sure to go into your Instagram settings and be sure your content preferences are actually chosen by you!” – Conservative Commentator Tomi Lahren
Amidst the rollout of these changes, voices from various spectrums expressed concerns over Instagram’s limitations on political content visibility. Critiques ranged from accusations of biased filtering to calls for users to actively review and adjust their content preferences.
As Instagram and Meta refine their approach to managing political content, the platform dynamics continue to evolve. Recent events, such as Tucker Carlson’s interview with Vladimir Putin and Elon Musk’s involvement with X, have added layers to the ongoing discourse around political discussions on social media.
Moreover, the restrictions on recommending children’s accounts, implemented across Facebook and Instagram in response to safety concerns, highlight the platforms’ ongoing commitment to creating safe and secure online spaces for users of all ages.
