India achieves historic milestone as first country to land on moon’s south pole.
India Makes History with Robotic Moon Landing
In an incredible feat, India has become the first country to successfully land a robotic moon lander on the south pole of the moon. This groundbreaking achievement comes just days after a Russian spacecraft tragically crashed into the lunar surface.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) confirmed the news at 8:34 a.m. EDT, announcing that their spacecraft, Chandrayaan-3, had “successfully soft-landed” on the moon’s south pole. This momentous occasion has been hailed as a historic day for India’s space sector by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to congratulate the ISRO for their remarkable success.
Chandrayaan-3, an unmanned probe, was launched on July 14 and recently entered the final phase of its mission. Last week, it successfully separated from its propulsion module, paving the way for its momentous landing. This achievement is particularly significant as it comes four years after the Chandrayaan-2 mission unfortunately crashed into the moon.
Interestingly, India’s successful landing on Wednesday coincided with Russia’s Luna-25 crashing into the moon’s south pole. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, revealed that Luna-25 had spun into an uncontrolled orbit, leading to its unfortunate demise. It seems that both Russia and India were engaged in a race to reach the moon’s south pole with their respective missions.
It’s worth noting that only four countries have managed to land spacecraft on the lunar surface: the United States, the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the People’s Republic of China, and now India. The United States, being the first and only country to have landed a man on the moon, is set to return in 2024 with the Artemis II mission, followed by another moon landing in 2025 with the Artemis III mission.
As we witness these incredible advancements in space exploration, it’s clear that humanity’s fascination with the moon continues to drive us forward. The future holds even more exciting possibilities as we push the boundaries of what we can achieve beyond our planet.
