Immigration Hypocrisy: How Democrats Talked About ‘Kids In Cages’ When Trump Was President

After only a few short months in office, President Joe Biden is overseeing an undeniable humanitarian crisis at the border between the United States and Mexico.

As the Daily Wire reported, “nearly a thousand child migrants have been kept in border detention facilities for longer than 10 days — far longer than the maximum amount of time children are supposed to be housed in Customs and Border Protection custody, 72 hours,” while the Biden administration has enforced a “border blackout,” preventing the media from covering the ongoing border operations.

There have been multiple accusations of hypocrisy given the vitriolic rejection of the Trump administration’s immigration policies — with Trump compared to Hitler and border control agents to concentration camp guards for keeping children in so-called “cages” — given that the policy failures of the Biden administration has now been exposed.

As the Democrats attempt to evade culpability, it’s important to take a look back at what high-ranking Democrats thought when the “cages” were not being run by Joe Biden, but by Donald Trump.

Joe Biden

“These 500-plus kids came with parents.  They separated them at the border, to make it a disincentive to come to begin with.  Big, real tough, we’re really strong, and guess what?  They cannot – it’s not, coyotes didn’t bring them over.  Their parents were with them.  They got separated from their parents, and it makes us a laughingstock and violates every notion of who we are as a nation.” 

“Parents were ripped, their kids were ripped from their arms and separated, and now they cannot find over 500 of sets of those parents, and those kids are alone.  Nowhere to go, nowhere to go.  It’s criminal, it’s criminal.” 

“The catch and release, you know what he’s talking about there?  If in fact you had a family came across and they were arrested, they in fact were given a date to show up for their hearing.  They were released, and guess what?  They showed up for a hearing.  And this is the first President in the history of the United States of America that anybody seeking asylum has to do it in another country.  That’s never happened before in America.  That’s never happened before in America.  You come to the United States and you make your case, that I seek asylum based on the following, on the following premise, why I deserve it under American law.  They’re sitting in squalor on the other side of the river.” Second presidential debate, October 2020.

“Under Trump, there have been horrifying scenes at the border of kids being kept in cages, tear-gassing asylum seekers, ripping children from their mothers’ arms.” Opinion piece by Joe Biden for the Miami Herald titled, “Our Latin America policies are morally bankrupt. Mine reflect American values.” June 24, 2019.

Kamala Harris

“They need to end this policy. It is unconscionable, it is immoral, it is wrong, and it is unnecessary, and I think there’s no question that it has become very evident to many many people who have been watching the images that this is not reflective of who we are as a country, and it’s got to stop, Ari. Full stop. It’s got to stop There should be values that are at play that are consistent with who we say we are as Americans. The government should be in the business of keeping families together, not tearing families apart, and not tearing children from their parents.” MSNBC June 2018.

“You look at the fact that this is a president who has pushed policies that’s been about putting babies in cages at the border in the name of security when in fact what it is, is a human rights abuse being committed by the United States government.” NAACP forum, July 24 2019. 

“We have always stood for the promise that we will be someone, we will be that country that will embrace you and protect you when you flee harm. So let’s fight for the best of who we are and for the ideals of our county. Their children are our children,” she added. “And we’re going to do everything we can to make sure these families are reunified.” July 26, 2018.

“I will immediately put in place a meaningful process for reviewing the cases for asylum, and release children from cages, and get rid of the private detention centers, and ensure that this microphone that the president of the United States holds in her hand is used in a way that is about reflecting the values of our country and not about locking children up.” First Democratic debate, June 27, 2019.

“A few moments ago I finished visiting with mothers who were separated from their children at the border. I can tell you they are in utter despair. The stories they shared with me paint a picture of human rights abuses being committed by our government. We are so much better this.” June 22, 2018.

“When babies are being put in cages, and children separated from their parents, in the name of border security, justice for immigrants is on the ballot. I’m running for president because I’m very clear immigrants have helped make America great. And somebody needs to tell Donald Trump, and remind him that some of his closest relatives are immigrants, too.” November 10, 2019

Pete Buttigieg

“We should call out hypocrisy when we see it. For a party that associates itself with Christianity to say it is OK to suggest that God would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents, that God would condone putting children in cages,” that party “has lost all claim to ever use religious language.” First Democratic debate, June 27, 2019.

Elizabeth Warren

“I first visited the McAllen Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas, which is operated by CPB. Inside the processing center, men and women were packed into cages — cage after cage after cage. Our group estimated that between forty and fifty men were being held in a cage that measured roughly ten feet by thirty feet. There was a wall a few feet high in the back that separated a small urinal area from the rest of the cage. The men were cramped, lying side by side under foil blankets directly on a concrete floor.” 

“CBP officials insisted that no one was held for longer than 72 hours. But as I walked by the cages, I asked the migrants through the metal grates how long they had been there. They held up their fingers in response: four fingers, five fingers, two hands’ worth. Some told me they had been held for fourteen days. One man called out to me that he just wanted a shower — he said he’d gone six days without a shower or the opportunity to brush his teeth. Another man told me that his two children, aged 15 and 16, were being held separately in the other room.” June 29, 2018

Bernie Sanders

Nancy Pelosi

“No, we do care about the border.  We care about protecting our country, but we don’t think we need to protect the border by putting children in cages.  We want to be smart and strong not reckless, rash and ruthless in this case. “ June 21, 2018.
