Ilhan Omar says she was protecting her ‘dignity’ in attack

Rep. Ilhan Omar said she was protecting her “dignity” after a man stood up at a Minneapolis town hall Tuesday and sprayed her with a syringe; the substance was later identified as apple cider vinegar and appeared to cause no physical harm beyond a foul smell. The attacker, Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, has been charged federally with assaulting and interfering with a member of Congress. Conspiracy theorists and President Trump suggested Omar staged the incident, and critics pointed to Poison Control guidance she did not follow; Omar responded on X that she feared losing her dignity more then losing her life and told detractors to “f*** off.” Omar also blamed Trump’s rhetoric for increasing threats against her and said antagonistic presidential language raises dangers for her and her community.

Ilhan Omar says she was protecting her ‘dignity’ in response to attack

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) defended her actions immediately after being attacked at a town hall Tuesday.

Omar was in Minneapolis Tuesday evening, addressing questions from constituents when a man stood up and sprayed her with an unknown substance from a syringe. At the time of the disruption, Omar was recommending that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem resign when the man, Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, stood up and shouted that Noem is “not resigning,” then emptied his syringe.

This syringe was later revealed to contain apple cider vinegar. Other than a foul vinegar smell, it appeared to not have caused any physical damage to the representative.

Still, conspiracy theorists echoed President Donald Trump, who suggested Omar “had herself sprayed” due to her response to being sprayed with the syringe. Omar confronted one theorist on X Thursday.

“I spoke with Poison Control. Their instructions were very clear and you didn’t follow any of them,” an X user wrote. “They said ‘If you are sprayed with an unknown substance: Get to fresh air immediately. Do not touch your face. Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse skin and eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Wash with soap and water. Seek medical attention right away, Call Poison Control for guidance. You didn’t do anything on this list because it was staged.”

While this user claims to be a comedian under the account bio, Omar took the post seriously.

“I didn’t do any of those things because I fear losing my dignity more than I fear losing my life. Something you coward losers will never understand. So f*** off,” Omar wrote on X.

This comes after Omar blamed Trump’s rhetoric for the attack.

“Every time the president of the United States has chosen to use hateful rhetoric to talk about me and the community that I represent, my death threats skyrocket,” Omar said during a press conference Wednesday.

Trump admitted to reporters after calling her a fraud Tuesday night that he had not seen the video of Omar’s attack.

“She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” Trump said.

Kazmierczak is facing federal charges of forcibly assaulting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with Omar while she performed her duties as a congresswoman.
