If Muslims behead Catholics in a church, does it make a sound with legacy media?
The article reports a brutal attack by ISIS-backed Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on the Parish of Blessed anuarite during a Catholic mass in Komanda, Democratic Republic of the congo. The terrorists violently murdered at least 49 churchgoers, including women and children, some reportedly by beheading. This massacre is part of a broader pattern of violent persecution against Christians, especially by radical Islamist groups in various countries. Despite the severity of such attacks, the article criticizes mainstream media, especially in the U.S., for underreporting or ignoring the ongoing global persecution of Christians. Highlighted are statistics showing millions of Christians face persecution worldwide, with calls for greater media attention and public awareness to address this “silent slaughter” and to treat Christian victims with the same concern given to other groups targeted by terrorism.
If Muslims behead Catholics in a church, does it make a sound with legacy media?
All was initially well for Catholics at Sunday night’s mass at the Parish of Blessed Anuarite in Komanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo. They reportedly gathered to engage in festivities celebrating the Catholic Church’s silver jubilee, but many of them would never get that opportunity.
In an instant, radical Islamic terrorists from the ISIS-backed Allied Democratic Forces burst into the church and began murdering innocent churchgoers, many of whom were women and children. Some were reportedly beheaded in the church. The most up-to-date reports have the fatality list at 49 people. It was the latest act in what should arguably be described as genocide against Christians. It’s an all-too-common occurrence that regularly gets underreported, if even reported at all.
“Attackers came in, and they beheaded Christians in the church,” a witness told Fox News. The ADF, whom the witness called jihadis, “killed those they met in the church hall. Those who tried to flee, they caught them, and killed them in the compound. And then some others who managed to run towards the road, those also were caught and killed. All of them were killed with machetes. Most of those Christians who were killed, were Catholics.”
The horrific slaughter was not given the media attention or scrutiny that other religious groups receive when they experience terrorist acts. There was coverage of the slaughter of the Catholics in the Congo in multiple worldwide publications, including the BBC, Reuters, and the Associated Press. However, it was done so in arguably minimal fashion insofar as it could be considered barely covered by news outlets. And, just days later, the attack on the Parish of Blessed Anuarite is mostly out of the news cycle — if it could even be considered “in the news cycle.”
A famous philosophical question asks, “If a tree falls in a forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Well, a reworded version of the question should ask, “If Muslims behead Catholics in a church, does it make a sound with legacy media?” It’s a question worth asking and one that deserves answers.
Why do legacy media outlets, particularly those in the U.S., refuse to give attention and scrutiny to the persecution of Christians around the world?
There were over 52,000 Christians massacred in Nigeria between 2009 and 2023 by radical Muslim terrorist groups. And that is just in one country! According to statistics compiled by an NGO that supports Christians around the world, 1 in 7 Christians are persecuted globally. Moreover, there are approximately 380 million Christians victimized by “high levels of persecution and discrimination.”
Henrietta Blyth, CEO of Open Doors UK and Ireland, has regularly spoken about Christian genocide in recent years, particularly at the hands of militant Islamic radicals.
“It has affected millions of people and, instead of days, this crisis has been going on for years,” Blyth wrote in an article for Premier Christianity. “And virtually nobody is talking about it.”
“This is a crisis of biblical proportions,” Blyth told Fox News while discussing the attack in the Congo.
POPE LEO MOURNS THOSE KILLED IN ATTACK ON CATHOLIC CHURCH BY ISIS-BACKED REBELS
“This is a silent slaughter happening, which nobody is discussing. It’s like the slaughter of the innocents in the Bible, really,” she said. “I mean, women and children are being targeted along with men. Nobody is reporting on it. Nobody even seems to be particularly concerned about it.”
It’s time for this crisis to end and for the entire world to start reporting on the atrocities against Christians across the globe. All media outlets should no longer be allowed to suppress these brutal attacks solely because the victims are Christians, and that doesn’t fit their ideological narratives. The poor souls who were beheaded at the church in the Congo deserve the same attention, scrutiny, empathy, and outrage that victims from other religious groups receive.
