Ian Haworth: The View Complains Nikki Haley’s Name Is “Too White”

Another day, another example of casual Leftist racism from The View, a show that somehow remains on the air despite demonstrating the collective political insight of a bag of week-old potatoes.

During a discussion regarding potential challengers to Donald Trump in 2024, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin celebrated the idea of competition from figures like Liz Cheney and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Because it is forbidden to suggest that any conservative women are viable candidates, co-host Sunny Hostin went on to accuse Haley — who was born to immigrant Indian Punjabi Sikh parents in South Carolina — of being a racial “chameleon.”

“You know, I think if she leaned into being someone of color,” Hostin said, after asking “What is [Haley’s] real name again?”

Later, Hostin added, “Yes, there are some of us that can be chameleons and decide not to embrace our ethnicities, so that we can pass…”

Hostin ignored the fact that she herself goes by a different name — her real name being Asunción Cummings Hostin — as does co-host Whoopi Goldberg — whose real name is the far less Jewish-sounding “Caryn Elaine Johnson” — as well as the fact that Haley’s name is Nikki, as demonstrated by her birth certificate.

“Thanks for your concern Sunny. It’s racist of you to judge my name. Nikki is an Indian name and is on my birth certificate — and I’m proud of that. What’s sad is the left’s hypocrisy towards Conservative minorities,” Haley responded in a statement.

There are two takeaways here. The first is the point Haley made in her response: that Hostin was undeniably hypocritical to categorize anyone as a racial chameleon for changing their name.

But the second takeaway tells us something about the American Left more broadly, and should worry us more than the confused and lazy thoughts of a single host of The View.

The truth is that — under their flawed system of intersectionality and identity politics — there is a set of expectations placed upon “people of color” that is entirely ideological in nature.

If you adhere to the “correct” set of beliefs — i.e. you are unquestionably loyal to the Democratic Party — then you are free to be an otherwise free-thinking individual. No-one will question your intentions if you, say, change your name.

But if you fail to prove your loyalty to the higher power of the Left — again, the Democratic Party — then by nature of their logic itself, the legitimacy of your race is in question. Suddenly, the motivation behind the changing of a name (even though such a change was entirely fabricated in the case of Nikki Haley) is defined as nefarious, meant to convince the evil “whites” that you are “one of them.”

Simply put: the American Left are as hypocritical as they are racist.
