In a sudden about-face, Hunter Biden has turned down a highly publicized opportunity to step into the spotlight of the congressional hearing room. Last year, he was willing to share his narrative before the nation; now, he’s opting out of the Republican-driven impeachment investigation targeting his father.
The Letter That Shook the Committee
Abbe Lowell, Hunter’s legal counsel, penned a decisive letter to the House Oversight Committee. Aside from a scheduling conflict with a court case, Lowell characterized the proposed hearing as a “carnival side show” unworthy of Hunter Biden’s time.
“Your blatant planned-for-media event is not a proper proceeding but an obvious attempt to throw a Hail Mary pass after the game has ended,” Lowell asserted, directly challenging Rep. James Comer (R., Ky.), the chairman steering the Oversight Committee.
A Sharp Reversal from Previous Commitments
This retreat marks a stark contrast to Hunter’s prior readiness to step into the fray, where he sought to substitute a public disclosure for a potential congressional subpoena. He justified his initial preference for an open forum over a private deposition to prevent any manipulation of his testimony.
The Contested Invitation
Rep. Comer extended an invitation to Hunter Biden and his associates for a March 20 hearing, ambitiously titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office.” The aim? To scrutinize the alleged intertwining of the president within Hunter’s business pursuits.
Background of Allegations
The Republicans have previously launched an impeachment investigation against President Biden concerning his potential ties to Hunter’s foreign business ventures. Contradicting the president’s disavowal of any involvement, there exists evidence suggesting his presence at pertinent discussions.

Rob Walker, an associate of the Biden family, informed Congress and the FBI of the Bidens’ attendance at a 2017 meeting with CEFC China Energy, which later resulted in a $6 million payment for consultancy and legal services to Hunter and his uncle, Jim Biden.
Committee’s Response and Upcoming Proceedings
“Despite Hunter Biden’s initial eagerness for an open hearing with his longtime business partners, he avoids it now that it’s a reality,” expressed a disenchanted Rep. Comer.
Comer stands firm, insisting the hearing will commence as planned and expecting Hunter Biden’s compliance and participation.
