Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon said the Democratic Party is “completely on the wrong side” of immigration while the public supports its enforcement.
“This is an issue which plays terribly badly for Democrats. It’s one where, essentially, they are siding where 80% of the country is opposed. This is actually Donald Trump’s most popular policy,” Gurdon said on NewsNation’s On Balance with Leland Vittert Tuesday. “He’s risen 21 points since his first administration on immigration. Immigration enforcement includes deportations. America agrees with him, and the Democrats have got themselves completely on the wrong side of this. So, yes, he’s on the offensive. Democrats are deeply on the defensive.”
Prominent Democratic lawmakers are defending a narrative that there are “peaceful protests” in Los Angeles that condemn Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in the area. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and Reps. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Nanette Barragan (D-CA) have bristled at the arrival of 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines.
Gurdon anticipated that Trump’s move to enlist federal forces in Southern California would not “turn on” the administration. The president defended his decision, saying he learned from his first term to send in the National Guard faster than governors tend to request it. Trump said he didn’t understand why “usually” Democratic governors “don’t want to save lives,” “don’t want to save property,” and “don’t want to call them in.”
Gurdon suggested that Democratic politicians should learn to be “on the side of America” and take a page out of Trump’s book ahead of the 2028 election.

“What allowed President Trump to be so appealing is that no one doubted that he was on the side of America,” Gurdon said.
The Center for Immigration Studies estimated that as of January, some 15.8 million illegal immigrants live in the United States. This represents a little less than a third of the foreign-born population in the U.S. Meanwhile, about 5.4 million illegal immigrants entered the country while former President Joe Biden was in office.
