DeSantis’s potential leverage: Civil War dispute to target Haley over abortion
Gov. Ron DeSantis Takes Aim at Nikki Haley’s Civil War Remarks
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and his supporters have been unafraid to criticize former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley for her failure to acknowledge slavery as a cause of the Civil War. However, DeSantis’s own explanation of the war’s origins raises questions about whether he will also use this opportunity to challenge Haley on her stance on abortion.
DeSantis’s Perspective on the Civil War
“Of course, you have the issue of slavery,” DeSantis stated. “You have the states that were concerned about Lincoln interfering and potentially eliminating it. And they viewed it as a state’s rights issue, not as a federal issue.”
The Florida governor went on to commend the abolition of slavery as the Republican Party’s “top achievement” and argued that it was a “partisan achievement” opposed by the Democrats.
However, this viewpoint aligns with DeSantis’s support for federal legislation restricting abortion access, in line with the recent Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. This decision upheld a Mississippi abortion ban and overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling from 1973.
Haley’s Stance on Abortion
Haley, like former President Donald Trump, has been hesitant to support federal legislation on abortion, although they both oppose legal abortion in most cases.
“When we’re looking at this, there are some states that are going more on the pro-life side. I welcome that,” Haley expressed during a Republican presidential debate. “There are some states that are going more on the pro-choice side. I wish that wasn’t the case, but the people decided.”
Haley has also indicated that she doubts more comprehensive anti-abortion legislation, such as a federal law prohibiting the procedure in most instances after 15 weeks of pregnancy, could pass the Senate due to the 60-vote threshold required to break a filibuster.
DeSantis has used Haley’s Civil War misstep to argue that she is ill-prepared for the national stage and unable to handle tough questions without relying on rehearsed talking points.
DeSantis’s Critique of Haley
“Nikki Haley is on day three of trying to clean up the inexplicable gaffe she made in New Hampshire about the cause of the Civil War, and she is only continuing to make things worse,” DeSantis’s campaign team stated.
“When she gets off script, she tends to make big mistakes,” DeSantis told Fox News. “The media has really given her a free pass for the last six weeks trying to pump her up, but I think the more voters see that … it’s one thing to read talking points, but you’ve gotta speak from a position of conviction. You either understand the foundations of America or you don’t.”
However, the anti-abortion movement often draws parallels between its cause and the abolition of slavery, emphasizing the protection of rights outlined in the Declaration of Independence.
DeSantis’s Position on Abortion
“Our rights come from God, not from government,” DeSantis asserted in a Fox interview. “And the purpose of government is to protect the rights we already possess. Everything I do is seen through the prism of our nation’s founding principles.”
This perspective can easily be applied to the current abortion debate, and it may be the seed that DeSantis is attempting to plant ahead of the Iowa caucuses.
DeSantis is aiming to challenge Trump and counter Haley’s rising popularity in Iowa, relying heavily on the support of evangelicals and other social conservatives.
While Haley has surpassed DeSantis in New Hampshire polls, she is believed to be seeking crossover votes from Democrats and independents. However, her response to the Civil War controversy may not resonate with these voting blocs. She has also been gaining ground on DeSantis in national and Iowa Republican polls.
Abortion has always been an issue where DeSantis could differentiate himself from Trump and Haley, both of whom have urged caution following recent setbacks in post-Dobbs elections.
With former Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) out of the race, DeSantis currently faces no major Republican candidates who align more conservatively with him on abortion.
Now, Haley’s remarks on the Civil War may have given DeSantis another opportunity to emphasize this issue.

In what ways does DeSantis’s position on abortion, emphasizing state’s rights while advocating for federal restrictions, create concerns about potential inconsistencies in his policies?
About substantive issues, but it’s another thing to actually handle tough questions.”
While DeSantis’s criticism of Haley’s historical knowledge is valid, it is important to examine his own stance on social issues like abortion. DeSantis’s support for restrictive legislation raises questions about how he would handle reproductive rights as a potential presidential candidate.
If DeSantis intends to challenge Haley on her views, it is essential for him to provide a clear and consistent position on abortion. Emphasizing the importance of state’s rights on one hand and calling for federal restrictions on abortion on the other raises concerns about the implications of his stance and potential inconsistencies in his policies.
Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that the Civil War and abortion are distinct issues with different historical contexts and consequences. While historical accuracy is important, it is equally significant for political leaders to articulate coherent and comprehensive positions on contemporary issues that have a direct impact on people’s lives today.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, it is expected that candidates will engage in lively debates and discussions on various topics. However, it is crucial for these discussions to be grounded in factual accuracy and for candidates to provide clear and consistent positions on important issues like abortion. With the spotlight on Haley’s historical misstep, it is imperative for DeSantis to clarify his own stance on abortion and address the questions it raises about his potential presidency.
