House Republican asserts DOGE savings will give ‘leeway’ for Trump tax cuts – Washington Examiner
In an interview, Representative Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) emphasized the importance of the Department of Government Efficiency’s cost-cutting measures, suggesting thay would provide the necessary financial versatility to fulfill President Donald Trump’s campaign promises, specifically regarding tax cuts. He argued that Congress needs to codify these cuts to enable the passing of critical legislation. Reschenthaler acknowledged concerns about potential tax increases but expressed confidence that House Republicans would unite in support of maintaining Trump’s 2017 tax cuts. He pointed to the possibility of saving meaningful funds from government waste that could be redirected towards Trump’s agenda. Discussions are underway in Congress regarding a major tax overhaul, with different proposals on the table, including expanding tax deductions for working-class taxpayers. However, House Republicans face a narrow majority, which complicates their ability to pass ample reforms. Reschenthaler’s comments highlight the GOP’s strategy to leverage cost savings and streamline tax policies in their legislative efforts.
House Republican asserts DOGE savings will give ‘leeway’ for Trump tax cuts
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) stressed that the Department of Government Efficiency‘s cost-cutting initiatives would provide the necessary “room” to fulfill President Donald Trump‘s campaign promises, adding that Congress needs to codify these cuts.
The Pennsylvania lawmaker said the president has “a mandate” to deliver results to voters, and passing “reconciliation” is Congress’s most important job at the moment. When asked about a potential tax increase under Trump’s watch, specifically due to the faction of the Republican Party that supports taxes, Reschenthaler said people have “underestimated” how House Republicans can come together in solidarity, and that the party needs to enact “permanency” with Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.
Reschenthaler was also asked about potentially rolling back expansions made to Medicaid worth $168 billion. In response, he pointed to DOGE’s findings, citing how an estimated trillion dollars in savings could be found in just waste, fraud, and abuse.
“What that’s going to do is it’s going to give us a lot of room with the CBO score to go after some of the priorities that the president had on the campaign trail, whether it’s no tax on tips, the other programs, we’re going to be able to look at that via their suggestions but again, we have to codify a lot of what DOGE is doing in order to give us the leeway in the CBO score to accomplish other tasks,” Reschenthaler said on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo, guest-hosted by Cheryl Casone.
Reschenthaler said Trump’s agenda would move forward as soon as House Republicans pass the president’s “one big, beautiful bill,” which Trump pushed before he returned to the White House.
TRILLIONS IN SPENDING CUTS? WHAT TO KNOW AS GOP STARTS WRITING HUGE TAX BILL
Amid the debate on renewing Trump’s tax cuts, Republicans are seeking to increase the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions as part of their major tax overhaul. However, unlike the 2017 overhaul, House Republicans and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) only have a small majority to work with, meaning only a handful of votes can be lost.
Last week, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) pitched the idea of expanding tax deductions and credits for all taxpayers who pay payroll taxes. He said discussions on Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill have so far included “surprisingly little talk of tax cuts” for the nation’s working class, whom he deemed “the people who need them most.”
