House launches investigation into the ‘manipulation’ of DC crime stats

The House Oversight Committee has initiated an investigation into allegations that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C., deliberately manipulated crime statistics. This inquiry follows president Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the D.C. police force. Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) cited whistleblower disclosures claiming that MPD leadership intentionally altered crime data, perhaps undermining the accuracy of public crime reports. the committee has requested documents and interviews with District Commander Michael Pulliam and commanders from all seven patrol districts. The investigation comes after Pulliam was placed on paid administrative leave over accusations of falsifying crime data, which he denies. Despite official statistics showing a important drop in violent crime since 2023, questions remain about the completeness and accuracy of these reports. Trump has described the crime data as “phony” and emphasized the ongoing investigation amid efforts to reform law enforcement in the capital.

House Oversight Committee launches investigation into ‘manipulation’ of DC crime stats

The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation Monday into the alleged manipulation of crime data in Washington, D.C., following President Donald Trump’s federalization of the district’s police force.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the investigation following allegations and whistleblower disclosures, saying leadership in the Metropolitan Police Department “deliberately” manipulated crime data. The committee is requesting documents, information, and transcribed interviews with District Commander Michael Pulliam and the District Commanders of all seven patrol districts.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating disturbing allegations that DC crime data is inaccurate and intentionally manipulated, potentially at the direction of Metropolitan Police Department leadership,” Comer said in the press release. “MPD has a duty under federal and local law to accurately report crime to the public.”

The investigation comes after Trump placed MPD “under direct federal control” and deployed National Guard troops in the capital to clamp down on crime. Earlier this year, the MPD put Pulliam on paid administrative leave for allegedly deliberately falsifying crime data. Pulliam has denied the allegations.

“The whistleblower stated this manipulation is accomplished by supervisors—with only a cursory understanding of the facts and circumstances of the crime—ignoring the judgment of patrol officers who actually interviewed witnesses and collected evidence by recommending reduced charges,” the press release stated.

Local crime statistics have shown a decrease in violent crime since 2023, down 35% in 2024 from 2023. But the data have come under scrutiny for not providing information on all crimes.

Trump said earlier this month that “phony” crime data in the nation’s capital would be investigated amid his federal takeover of the local police.

“They are under investigation right now,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “They are giving us phony crime stats, just like they gave other stats in the financial world. But they’re phony crime stats, and Washington, D.C., is at its worst point, and it will soon be at its best point.”
