Biden’s prisoner swap with Iran linked to nuclear deal, says House Intelligence Chairman.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Raises Concerns Over Proposed Prisoner Swap with Iran
During a recent interview, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) expressed his concerns about a proposed prisoner swap between the U.S. and Iran. According to Turner, this exchange is part of a larger deal that involves negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
Turner made these remarks while speaking on CBS News’ “Face The Nation.” He revealed that the agreement also includes the unfreezing of $6 billion in Iranian assets by the U.S. government.
Turner stated, “At this point, we have not received the terms of the deal, or even what the proposed deal is. The administration has signaled that the release of these detainees is part of a broader negotiation with respect to reinstating some controls on the nuclear weapons and enrichment programs of Iran, dating back to the JCPOA. The concern is that, as reported by the New York Times, the administration may be pursuing an informal deal instead of the formal deal that had congressional oversight.”
While Turner acknowledged the importance of bringing the American prisoners home, he emphasized that it should not come at the cost of a “secret deal” regarding Iran’s enrichment program.
Turner also highlighted the advancements in Iran’s technology, which have significantly reduced the time it would take for them to build a nuclear weapon. He mentioned that Iran has removed cameras from their sites, making it difficult to monitor their activities and violating the previous agreement.
