House Dems: Clintons’ depositions set precedent for future Trump interview
House Democrats say Clintons’ depositions set precedent for future Trump interview
House oversight committee Democrats argued that the testimonies of former first couple Hillary and Bill Clinton laid the ground for a future deposition from President Donald Trump.
House oversight committee Republicans scored a major victory on Thursday after Hillary Clinton finally relented and showed up to testify in front of Congress over her relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. After defending Clinton, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) used the opportunity to argue that the testimonies of the Clintons set a precedent to get a similar testimony from the sitting president.
“I think today also sets a precedent,” he said. “So I want to be very clear that we have said from Day 1 that we want to talk to former President Bill Clinton, and the other person we want to talk to is current President Donald Trump.”
“So we should be very clear that now that we’re going to hear from former President Clinton, I hope that James Comer and the Republicans will join us in demanding that the person who actually appears more times in the files than the former president, who we want to speak with, is President Donald Trump,” Garcia said. “And so let’s get President Trump in front of our committee to answer the questions that are being asked across this country, from survivors, from those who have been brutally attacked and raped, sometimes as children. Let’s release the files.”
Democrats are also hoping to go after Trump administration officials with past relationships to Epstein, mainly Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
When asked if he would be willing to ask Lutnick to testify, “in the spirit of bipartisanship,” Rep. James Comer (R-KY) expressed openness.
“That’s very possible, and I think there, I think it’s a good possibility that his name will arise in some questioning today, we’re asking again, and I want to remind everyone we’ve already brought in Alex Acosta and Bill Barr for deposition,” Comer said. “That’s two Republicans in the Trump administration. So this isn’t just about Democrats.”

Trump and Epstein were widely documented as friends before his first sex offense conviction, with the two falling out in the early 2000s. No connections between the two have been found after Epstein’s first arrest. The same can’t be said for Lutnick, however, who was revealed in the recent batch of Epstein files to have maintained a strong relationship with Epstein well after his 2008 conviction, despite having publicly claimed to have cut ties with him.
“Not only did he visit the island, he had tons of communication with Jeffrey Epstein after it was already known that Jeffrey Epstein was essentially convicted for preying on children,” Garcia said last week on the CBS News program Face the Nation.
