House Democrats roasted over ‘shutdown selfie’

A selfie taken of House Democrats was met with rage from their Republican colleagues as the deadline for a government shutdown approaches.

Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) took the selfie on an iPhone, flanked by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) with more members behind them. A photo of Aguilar taking the photo was posted on the House Democrats X account.

“House Democrats are in DC and ready to cancel the cuts, lower the costs, save health care,” the account captioned the photo.

The photo drew the ire of Republicans who presented a plan to fund the government. The plan has passed the House but has yet to pass the Senate.

“Oh look, it’s everyone who voted for a government shutdown in one photo,” Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) wrote. “The Shutdown Selfie.”

“Nice photo op, @HouseDemocrats. They’re celebrating the Schumer Shutdown,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) wrote.

Rep. Brian Steil (R-WI) made a joke referencing X’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok.

“.@grok, show me a photo of everyone who voted to shut down the government,” Steil wrote.

“Portrait of a Government Shutdown,” Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) wrote.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) poked fun at Aguilar, who took the photo without using the iPhone’s front-facing camera.

“A few observations: 1. He’s holding the phone backwards 2. This is everyone who voted to shut down the government in one photo 3. They want an absurd $1.5T spending package to fund free health care for illegals 4. @HouseGOP will never stop putting the AMERICAN PEOPLE FIRST,” Donalds wrote.

“How many hours do you think they spent coming up with ‘cancel the cuts, lower the costs, save health care,’ to explain why they are shutting down the federal government?” White House Deputy Chief of Policy Stephen Miller wrote.

GOP FIGHTS FOR UPPER HAND AS WASHINGTON BRACES FOR GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

The continuing resolution, which funds the government through Nov. 21, includes a $30 million increase for a law enforcement mutual aid fund. This is in addition to the $58 million request from the Trump administration for security increases for the executive and judicial branches. Another $1 billion funding fix for the Washington, D.C., budget is also included.

The deadline to fund the government is midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
