House Democrats push for another vote to expel George Santos
House Democrats Push for Vote to Expel Rep. George Santos Following Scathing Ethics Committee Report
House Democrats are taking action to force another vote on whether to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress. This comes after the release of a damning House Ethics Committee report. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), along with Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY), announced the introduction of an expulsion resolution in ”privileged” form, which compels leadership to schedule a vote within 48 hours.

“The time has finally come to remove George Santos from Congress. If we’re going to restore faith in government, we must start with restoring integrity in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Garcia stated. He added, “It is essential for the American people to have Representatives they can trust and who don’t build their careers on deceit and falsehoods. We have once again forced an expulsion vote on the House floor because enough is enough.”
Expulsion from the House, a rare occurrence in U.S. history, requires a two-thirds majority vote to succeed. House Ethics Chairman Michael Guest (R-MS) has also introduced an expulsion resolution against Santos, but it has not been privileged.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not yet revealed how the chamber will handle Garcia’s privileged resolution. However, he did mention that he spoke to Santos about his “options” during the Thanksgiving recess. In response, Santos declared that he would not resign and would stand for an expulsion vote.
Santos, who was elected to his first term last year, has faced controversy surrounding his candor and finances. He is currently facing federal charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty. The House Ethics Committee’s report revealed substantial evidence of multiple violations related to Santos’ campaign, personal, and business finances.
Santos has criticized the congressional inquiry as a political smear but announced that he would not seek re-election after the release of the ethics report. While he has survived previous attempts to expel him from the House, a growing number of lawmakers now express their intention to vote for his ouster.
During a recent conversation, Santos predicted that he would be expelled from the House with another expulsion resolution brought to a vote. “I’ve done the math over and over, and it doesn’t look really good,” he said.
How does the invocation of “privileged” status for the expulsion resolution indicate the urgency and seriousness with which House Democrats view the matter?
Ave trust in their elected representatives, and the actions detailed in the Ethics Committee report make it clear that Rep. Santos is not fit to serve.”
The push for expulsion comes after a scathing Ethics Committee report was released, detailing numerous ethical violations and misconduct by Rep. Santos. The report accused Rep. Santos of using his position for personal gain and engaging in unethical behavior. It also highlighted instances of financial impropriety and conflicts of interest.
Rep. Dan Goldman, who co-introduced the expulsion resolution, emphasized the importance of holding elected officials accountable for their actions. He stated, ”Public officials are entrusted with the responsibility of serving the American people and upholding high ethical standards. It is unacceptable for a member of Congress to engage in the type of behavior outlined in the Ethics Committee report.”
The expulsion resolution being introduced in “privileged” form signifies the urgency and seriousness with which the House Democrats view this matter. By invoking this privileged status, the resolution forces House leadership to schedule a vote within 48 hours. This expedited timeline reflects the Democrats’ commitment to addressing the issue promptly and without delay.
The move to expel Rep. Santos is not without precedent. The House has the authority to expel a member with a two-thirds majority vote. Expulsion is a rare occurrence, but when misconduct and ethical violations reach such egregious levels, it becomes imperative to take swift action. The Ethics Committee report has provided the necessary evidence for House Democrats to make a compelling case for expulsion.
House Majority Leader, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), has expressed his support for the resolution and indicated that he will work to ensure a prompt vote on the matter. He stated, “The Ethics Committee report raises serious concerns about Rep. Santos’ conduct, and it is our duty to address these concerns and take appropriate action. We owe it to the American people to hold our elected officials accountable.”
It remains to be seen how the rest of Congress will respond to the resolution. While it is expected that House Democrats will largely support the expulsion of Rep. Santos, the outcome will depend on whether enough Republicans are willing to join their counterparts across the aisle in condemning his actions. A bipartisan effort would send a strong message about the commitment to upholding ethical standards in Congress.
Regardless of the outcome, the push for expulsion from House Democrats serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining ethical conduct and integrity in public office. It is crucial for lawmakers to lead by example and demonstrate their commitment to serving the public’s best interests. The vote on whether to expel Rep. Santos will be a testament to Congress’s willingness to hold its members accountable and to restore faith in the institution of government.
