House Democrats in El Salvador haven’t met Abrego Garcia

House Democrats visiting El Salvador have been unable to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia,a key individual they intended to speak with regarding his detention. After a day in the country, four Democratic lawmakers—Reps. Robert Garcia, Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, and Maxine Dexter—were denied access to him, despite a successful meeting he had with Senator Chris van Hollen. Their trip was aimed at pressuring the Trump Administration to comply with a Supreme Court order for Abrego GarciaS safe return, following allegations that he was wrongfully deported.

Instead of meeting Abrego Garcia, the members met with U.S. Ambassador william Duncan at the embassy, but they felt there was no assurance that the embassy would respect the Supreme Court ruling. In response, they composed a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding proof of Abrego Garcia’s well-being and access to legal counsel. The case has garnered attention due to abrego Garcia’s classification as an MS-13 member during the Trump administration, which led to his deportation under contested conditions. As being deported, he has been moved from a terrorism confinement center to an undisclosed prison.

House Democrats in El Salvador have yet to meet Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Four Democratic House members have so far been denied meetings with Kilmar Abrego Garcia after a day in El Salvador.

While Abrego Garcia was able to meet with Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) last week, Reps. Robert Garcia (D-CA), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Yassamin Ansari, (D-AZ) and Maxine Dexter (D-OR) have yet to confirm his condition. Monday’s trip was meant “to pressure the Trump Administration to abide by a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return” of Abrego Garcia per a joint press release.

Instead the group met with William Duncan, the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador at the El Salvador embassy. However the meeting provided “zero indication” that the embassy planned to follow through on the Supreme Court ruling, Frost claimed in a press conference.

The Supreme Court decision was a “per curiam” decision, which does not necessarily mean it was unanimous. These are made without rendering written opinions, as Justice Sonia Sotomayor offered merely a statement along with Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“Since we were not able to get the answers we need today from the embassy, we have written a letter, just as of 30 minutes ago, to Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, demanding daily proof of life for Mr. Abrego Garcia, demanding he sees he has access to counsel, and of course, finally, demanding his safe return home,” Ansari said at the conference. “And we will not stop until this is complete.”

The Washington Examiner reached out to the State Department for comment.

FOUR HOUSE DEMOCRATS FLY TO EL SALVADOR TO VISIT ABREGO GARCIA

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele remains committed to keeping Abrego Garcia, as the Trump administration classified him as a member of MS-13 before deporting him in March. Despite Abrego Garcia’s “withholding removal” status, he still had active deportation orders at the time the administration sent him to his home country.

However, the Salvadoran is no longer in the terrorism confinement center, Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, referred to as the CECOT. Instead, he was moved to another undisclosed prison.
