Homan says Trump has ‘no limitation’ in power to make country safe

Border czar Tom Homan believes President Donald Trump has no limits to his power to make the United States safe.

Homan’s statement comes after the president federalized Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department in an effort to ameliorate crime in the district.

“We’ll see,” Homan said when asked if 30 days was enough for Trump to make Washington safe. “President Trump doesn’t have a limitation on his authority to make this country safe again. There’s no limitation on that,” he added.

Trump said Wednesday that he will ask Congress to extend his 30-day control over the MPD. In an evening post on social media, the president said Washington is under federal control “where it belongs.”

The border czar’s comments come as the president receives criticism for his federalization of the MPD, signaling that Trump may also try to influence the policies of other large cities in the country. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) called Trump a “wannabe king” and said the move to federalize the district is “unjustified.”

“The Trump administration has consistently broken the law and violated the Constitution to further the personal and political agenda of a wannabe king,” Jeffries said in a statement Monday. “We stand with the residents of the District of Columbia and reject this unjustified power grab as illegitimate.”

Trump said he will seek changes to crime laws in Washington and other cities.

“We’re going to go for statutes in D.C. and then ultimately for the rest of the country, where that’s not going to be allowed,” he said, noting New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Trump wants Washington to serve as a “beacon” for other cities. “We’re going to do something, and that’s going to serve as a beacon for New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other places all over the country,” he said.

“Our whole country is going to be so different and so great — going to be clean and safe and beautiful, and people are going to love our flag more than they’ve ever loved it,” he added.

Trump has compared his border efforts, which he views as successful, to his federal crackdown on Washington.

“People are feeling safe already. I’ve had so many calls. ‘Thank you, sir, thank you.’ They were afraid to walk out. They’re not afraid anymore. And this will be like the border,” Trump said.

“This is going to be a crime-free area. By the way, you’ll be able to go out. People tell me they can’t run anymore. They’re just afraid, and they’ll be running again,” the president concluded.

Homan also said he believes the nation’s capital, which has had declining crime rates in recent decades, is dangerous.

TRUMP CLAIMS DC IS UNDER FEDERAL CONTROL ‘WHERE IT BELONGS’

“D.C. is a dangerous place,” Homan said.

“I don’t go on the streets at night without a gun. And, you know, it’s dangerous. I mean, we see the crime in D.C., and you’ve got the Democrats saying that crime isn’t that bad. Come on. You walk through the streets of D.C. It’s not safe to walk the streets at night here,” he added.
