Border czar Tom Homan revealed he had a “productive” meeting on Tuesday with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Homan’s meeting was in response to the controversy surrounding the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti. Homan was deployed to Minnesota by President Donald Trump to deescalate political tensions stemming from Pretti’s death.
Homan posted about the positive conversation in a social media post on X.
“Today I met with Governor Walz, Mayor Frey, and top law enforcement officials to discuss the issues on the ground in Minnesota,” Homan posted. “We all agree that we need to support our law enforcement officers and get criminals off the streets. While we don’t agree on everything, these meetings were a productive starting point and I look forward to more conversations with key stakeholders in the days ahead.”
Homan’s meeting with Frey was apparently arranged during a phone conversation between President Donald Trump and the Minneapolis mayor on Monday. Trump provided an optimistic view of the communication and announced Homan’s visit.
“I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis. Lots of progress is being made!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday. “Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow in order to continue the discussion.”
The talks between Homan, Frey, and Walz are the latest developments in a tenuous situation in Minneapolis. Federal law enforcement officers were deployed to Minnesota in December as part of Operation Metro Surge as part of Trump’s illegal immigration enforcement operations. Protesters have opposed the deployment and have held demonstrations against the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in the city.
Two civilians were killed by federal law enforcement operations in Minnesota in January. Their deaths have led to continuous protests and demonstrations throughout the city, leading to calls for the reduction of tensions. Earlier this week, 60 CEOs in Minnesota wrote a letter published by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce urging deescalation.

Frey and Walz have called for illegal immigration enforcement operations to end in Minnesota and have insisted that ICE and other federal law enforcement officers leave the state. Homan, meanwhile, expressed his commitment to law enforcement efforts and “safe and secure” American cities.
“President Trump has been clear: he wants American cities to be safe and secure for law-abiding residents — and they will be,” Homan said in his post.
