Hollywood writers to review studios’ counteroffer.
Breaking News: Hollywood Writers’ Strike Shows Signs of Progress
The union representing striking Hollywood writers announced on Friday that it has received a counterproposal from the studios. This development is seen as a positive step forward in the more than 100-day-old strike.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) revealed that it will carefully consider the offer from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which negotiates on behalf of major companies like Walt Disney and Netflix. The WGA plans to respond next week after thorough deliberation.
Earlier this month, both sides met to discuss resuming talks and the issues they intended to bring to the bargaining table. However, the WGA criticized the studios afterward, indicating that the negotiations were strained.
The strike by Hollywood writers began on May 2, following an impasse in negotiations with the major studios. The key points of contention include compensation, minimum staffing of writers’ rooms, and residual payments in the streaming era.
In a related development, actors represented by the Screen Actors Guild went on strike on July 14, also demanding fair pay and addressing concerns about artificial intelligence. This strike has effectively halted the production of scripted television shows and films, impacting various businesses within the entertainment industry. Notably, this is the first time both unions have gone on strike since 1960.
