Hochul denounces man’s shotgun firing near temple on Hanukkah’s first day
Gov. Kathy Hochul Denounces Shooting Outside Jewish Temple on Hanukkah
On the first day of Hanukkah, a shocking incident unfolded outside Temple Israel in Albany, New York. A 28-year-old man fired a shotgun and, in a disturbing act, shouted “Free Palestine!” The police swiftly launched an investigation, treating it as a hate crime.
Hochul Calls for Unity and Action
Gov. Kathy Hochul wasted no time in denouncing the shooter’s actions. In a powerful statement, she declared, “Any act of antisemitism is unacceptable, and undermining public safety at a synagogue on the first night of Hanukkah is even more deplorable.” She emphasized the need for New Yorkers to stand united against hate, antisemitism, and violence.
Hochul took immediate action, directing the New York State Police and New York National Guard to increase patrols and be on high alert at at-risk sites, including synagogues, yeshivas, and community centers. She made it clear that the safety of Jewish New Yorkers is non-negotiable.
Mayor Adams and Mayor Sheehan Join the Call
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also expressed his concern and announced that the city’s police would be on high alert. Although there were no known connections to the city, he wanted to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan condemned the shooting as a symptom of the growing anti-Semitism in the country. She stressed the collective responsibility to stand up and speak out against such hatred, emphasizing the importance of preventing history’s atrocities from repeating themselves.
Together, these leaders are sending a clear message: New York will not tolerate acts of hate, and the safety and well-being of its Jewish communities are of utmost importance.
