Here’s what’s open (and closed) on New Year’s Day in DC

Over the New Year’s holiday, some museums, stores, and restaurants will be closed, and others will have limited hours. While holiday schedules vary, a few places will remain open in the district.

Museums

  • All 17 Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. This includes the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Natural History, the American Art Museum, Smithsonian Gardens, African American History and Culture Museum, and the Air and Space Museum, among others.
  • The Holocaust Museum will be open during its usual hours (10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).
  • The International Spy Museum will open as usual (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
  • Traditionally, the National Building Museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which means the museum will be closed on New Year’s Eve as it falls on a Wednesday. The museum should resume normal hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on New Year’s Day.
  • Planet Word is opening one hour later than usual on New Year’s Day at 11 a.m.
  • The National Archives museum and rotunda in Washington is open for its usual hours.

Grocery stores

  • Amazon Fresh will be open during its usual hours.
  • Wegman’s will close early on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m.
  • Walmart will be open for its usual hours.
  • Target will close early on New Year’s Eve and open late on New Year’s Day, with hours varying by location.

  • Aldi.
  • Trader Joe’s will be open until 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, then it will be closed on New Year’s Day.
  • Costco will be open during its usual hours on New Year’s Eve and close on New Year’s Day.
  • Sam’s Club will be open all day on New Year’s Eve, but closed on New Year’s Day.

Restaurants

  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.
  • Capital Grille will be open on New Year’s Eve, but closed for New Year’s Day.

Government offices

  • The United States Postal Service will be open on New Year’s Eve. Then it will be closed on New Year’s Day. Regular post office hours and mail delivery will resume on Friday, Jan. 2.
  • The Department of Motor Vehicles will be open on New Year’s Eve, but closed on New Year’s Day.
