If both chambers‌ of Congress fail to agree on a continuing resolution before October 1, a government shutdown⁣ will occur, resulting⁢ in furloughs or unpaid work for hundreds of‌ thousands of ⁢federal workers. The last government shutdown took place in⁤ December 2018 and lasted for 35 days, ending in January 2019.

A ⁤government‍ shutdown ⁤would lead to the closure of many federal agencies, except for⁣ essential ‍services. Those required to work during the shutdown ⁤would do so without pay, while members of⁤ Congress would still receive their pay as it is⁣ constitutionally‌ mandated.
