Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has passed away at the remarkable age of 100.
The Democrat, who was the last surviving member of 37th President Richard Nixon’s cabinet, passed away at his residence in Connecticut.
Kissinger escaped Nazi Germany in 1938 and arrived in the United States as a young teenager. He studied at Harvard University and later became a faculty member before entering the world of Washington, D.C.
He is renowned for being the only person to have simultaneously served as the White House national security advisor and the secretary of state. Alongside his work under Nixon’s administration, he also collaborated with President Gerald Ford.
His most significant achievements occurred between 1969 and 1977. During this time, Kissinger pursued a policy of détente to engage with the Soviet Union amidst the height of the Cold War, and he established a new strategic alliance by negotiating a rapprochement with China.
In 1973, he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for his involvement in ending the United States’ participation in the Vietnam War and leading peace talks between Israel and Arab states, ultimately bringing the Yom Kippur War to a close.
In 1977, Ford awarded Kissinger the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing his wise and compassionate use of America’s power in the pursuit of peace.
He officially retired from public office in 1977. Kissinger went on to establish a geopolitical consulting firm and authored over a dozen books.
Kissinger is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Nancy Maginnes. The couple had two children and five grandchildren.
