‘DeSantis urges Trump to attend debate and present his case.’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Calls on Trump to Participate in GOP Primary Debates
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis believes that former President Trump should not shy away from the GOP primary debates and instead, should seize the opportunity to “show up and make his case” to the voters.
DeSantis expressed his opinion during an interview with Newsmax’s Eric Bolling. When asked about Trump’s potential absence from the first debate hosted by Fox News on August 23 in Milwaukee, DeSantis emphasized the importance of engaging in a meaningful discussion about the future of the country.
“Yeah, I think he ought to debate,” DeSantis stated confidently. “I’m going to debate; I’m going to be there. It’s a great opportunity for us to have a great discussion about the country’s future.”
DeSantis firmly believes that no one is entitled to be nominated and that earning it through participation and answering tough questions is crucial. He emphasized the urgency of reversing the decline the country is currently experiencing.
“Nobody’s entitled to be nominated; you’ve got to earn it,” DeSantis added. “And I think he should show up and make his case and answer questions like the rest of us. At the end of the day, this country’s in decline. We all see that, we all know that. I’m running because I want to reverse the decline.”
DeSantis also expressed his hope that future Republican debates would focus on substantive issues rather than personal attacks. He pledged not to engage in name-calling, even if Trump were to initiate it.
“When I announced my candidacy in May I was asked questions about Trump criticizing me,” DeSantis explained. “I hit back very directly but it was on substance. I’m not going to attack him personally. I’m not going to call him names. I’m not gonna do that. That’s just not my style, not my cup of tea.”
Looking ahead, DeSantis shared his determination to hit the ground running if elected president in 2024.
“We’re gonna spit nails,” DeSantis declared. “We’re gonna bring all this stuff in for a landing and the country will be better off for it.”
In late June, NBC News reported that Trump was considering skipping the GOP debate and organizing his own event instead. This wouldn’t be the first time Trump has chosen not to participate in debates, as he famously skipped the final Republican debate before the Iowa caucuses in 2016. However, DeSantis remains committed to attending the debates and engaging with his fellow candidates.
Earlier this month, DeSantis emphasized the importance of appealing beyond the Republican party’s base, stating, “At the end of the day, people want to win, and you can’t win with just Republican voters. I think we showed in Florida, if you want a big victory, you’ve got to win independent voters, you’ve got to win people who haven’t voted for our party in the last several cycles. I’ve shown I can do that, and I think we can do it nationally.”
